Unfortunately, quite a few Marine officers clearly don’t belong in this prestigious institution. They’re either too evil for a Marine or too good and honest to be one. Surprisingly, these kinds of people appear all throughout the chain of command. From Captain to Fleet Admiral, these are the 7One Piececharacters who never should’ve become Marines.
7Vegapunk
As a scientist, Vegapunk has dedicated his life entirely to advancing science. Unfortunately for him, most of his works ended up as weapons for the Marines. After all, he is the World Government’s Head Scientist. So why would someone like Vegapunk, a man who loves and respects the purity of science, choose to work for the World Government? The answer is simple: funding and protection.
Vegapunk understands how vital his research is,especially regarding the Void Century.But just like in the real world, cutting-edge science requires money and safety. A genius like him is a target, and without the World Government’s backing, his inventions could easily fall into the wrong hands. That’s why he had no choice but to join them, much to his friends’ dismay. What the Marines don’t realize, however, is the fact that Vegapunk makes their weapons while secretly continuing his research on the Void Century.
6Jaguar D. Saul
A Man Too Good for the Marines
Jaguar D. Saul was a good man who wanted nothing more than to serve the public. Under his superior’s orders, Saul spent a lot of time with the researchers from Ohara. They treated him kindly, and in return, he did his best to protect the brilliant scholars from this tiny island during their expeditions around the world.
But just as Saul began to feel at home among the people of Ohara, the World Government discovered the true focus of their research: the Void Century. In no time,the Marines issued the infamous Buster Call on Ohara Island and its residents.A command that meant total destruction and massacre. Saul couldn’t believe the atrocity the Marines were about to commit. So, he betrayed the institution he once loved and respected, doing everything he could to save the people of Ohara. Unfortunately, he was too late. The only one he managed to save was a young girl named Nico Robin. That was the moment Saul regretted ever becoming a Marine.
5Aramaki
A Man Who Would Do Anything to Gain Sakazuki’s Recognition
Aramaki, also known as Ryokugyu, is one of the two Admirals who filled the positions left vacant by Aokiji and Akainu. His Devil Fruit ability enables himto harness the power of plants and forests,which makes him an extremely powerful and dangerous enemy to Pirates and other criminals alike.
Unlike his fellow Admiral Fujitora, however, Aramaki’s loyalty doesn’t lie with the people, justice, or the rule of law. He bows his head to Fleet Admiral Sengoku and will do anything to please him, even if it means committing a crime and hurting innocent people. This is precisely what he’s done when he decided to infiltrate the newly saved Wano Country in order to kill Luffy, even if it means hurting Momonosuke and the samurai of Wano in the process. All for the sake of getting recognition from Sakazuki. Forget being an Admiral, a man like this shouldn’t be a Marine in the first place.
4Sakazuki
A Cruel and Merciless Marine
Sakazuki is the current Fleet Admiral of the Marines. During his time as an Admiral, he was known as a ruthless Marine who would do anything to catch the bad guys. He would deceive, betray, and even kill those who stand in the way of him and his target. His justice is cruel and unforgiving.
Sakazuki has revealed his merciless nature time and time again throughout the story. The most notable examples are his actions during the Marineford War andhis brutal battle with fellow Admiral Aokiji.A Marine should uphold justice and apprehend criminals to the best of their ability. But that doesn’t mean he has to abandon his human side altogether. A Marine who is willing to do anything to catch a Pirate will soon find himself hurting innocent civilians under the excuse of upholding the law. That’s why a man like Sakazuki shouldn’t even be a Marine in the first place.
3Vergo
The Marine Who Was a Spy All Along
Vergo is a Marine Vice Admiral who first appears in the Punk Hazard arc. He is a respected Marine who is famous for his mastery of the Armament Haki. Forget Devil Fruit powers, all he needs is a piece of bamboo stick and his well-trained Armament Haki to take down an entire pirate crew. What the people in the Marines don’t realize, however, is the fact that Vergo is actually one of the highest-ranking officers of the Doflamingo Pirates. He joined the Marines to become a spy for Doflamingo.
The fact that there isa spy in such a high-ranking positionis an absolute embarrassment for the Marines. The sheer volume of vital intel Vergo has passed to Doflamingo is hard to fathom. This one is not really on Vergo, but more on the utter failure of the Marines to keep the integrity of their institution intact. Considering his background, Vergo shouldn’t be able to become a Marine. Yet here he is, enjoying his position as a Vice Admiral.
2Nezumi
A Corrupt and Money-Hungry Marine Captain
Nezumi is a Marine Captain who appearsduring the Arlong Park arc.He is the one who is responsible for keeping the people of the Conomi Island and its surrounding islands safe. But rather than capturing Arlong, the cruel local overlord, Nezumi receives monthly bribes from him instead. In exchange for this nice sum of money, this Marine Captain purposely turns the other way and lets Arlong do as he pleases.
Sakazuki may be cruel and violent, but at least he is still doing his job as a champion of justice to the best of his ability. Nezumi, on the other hand, doesn’t even care about doing his job properly. On the contrary, he uses his position as a Marine Captain to enrich himself. He is a corrupt officer who should’ve been fired a long time ago.
1Morgan
A Cruel and Power-Hungry Marine Captain
Captain Morgan is the first major antagonist in this series. He is the one who captured Zoro and threatened to execute him. Morgan used to be a stoic Marine who always followed the rule of law to the letter. He was admired by the citizens and respected by his peers. But everything changed when he became a Captain and got the chance to oversee his own region.
In no time at all,Morgan became drunk with power and influence.He abused his position and ruled with an iron fist. Anybody who dares to complain about him will find themselves facing the gallows. Nezumi is a corrupt officer, but he only uses his position to enrich himself. Morgan, on the other hand, actively hurt and punished innocent civilians.
The fact that it took Luffy, an up-and-coming pirate, to stop Morgan only proves how poorly the Marines oversee their own. Had the Marine HQ even bothered to look into Morgan, they would’ve realized that the man doesn’t deserve to be a Marine, let alone a Captain. He should’ve been fired and put in prison a long time ago.
