Summary
Avowedhasreceived a new update that adds important features and adjustments, and developer Obsidian Entertainment has also revealed a roadmap for the title. One of the biggest RPGs to release in the early part of 2025,Avowedhas garnered positive reception, with the title currently boasting an average score of 80 onOpenCritic. Obsidian’sPillars of Eternity-set fantasy RPG impressed with its snappy first-person melee and ranged combat as well as its varied and beautiful environments.
Not even halfway through the year, 2025 can already be considered the “year of the RPG.” Obsidian’sAvowedand Warhorse Studio’s medieval fantasy sequelKingdom Come: Deliverance 2kicked the year off right for RPG fans, with the latter immediately obtaining a spot in Game of the Year discussions upon its release. Massive RPG titles likeMonster Hunter Wilds,Assassin’s Creed Shadows,Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and thelong-rumored remaster of 2006’sThe Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivionshortly followed. Obsidian even has a second major RPG planned to release later this year inThe Outer Worlds 2.
Obsidian has releasedUpdate 1.4 forAvowedand has also shared information about incoming updates planned through this fall. An arachnophobia mode has been added toAvowedas part of Update 1.4, which makes sense considering Obsidian was one of the first studios to pioneer the mode with its backyard base-builder survival game,Grounded. Additionally, considering just how frequently players come acrossgiant spider enemies inAvowed, many players will likely be pleased by the new addition. The Fog of War onAvowed’s area maps will behave differently now, too, as exploring will wipe away a larger radius of the fog, which will now clear up altogether if all the key areas of a map have been visited.
As for the newAvowedroadmap, it promises two major blocks of updates: one in the summer and one in the fall. In the summer,Avowedfans can expect more quality of life improvements, such as updated NPC behaviors and a revamp to the game’s cooking and crafting mechanics. This block will also bring new abilities to players' skill trees, and will even add new weapons and armor. The features in the fall block are much more substantial, with Obsidian promising the addition of themuch-requested New Game Plusand photo modes, new Godlike character features, and more. Though Obsidian didn’t specify, it can be assumed that both the summer and fall blocks laid out will be the big updates, and that their promised features won’t be split into smaller patches.
As the core summer months approach,Avowedplayers should keep an eye on Obsidian’s social media for word on when the next update is dropping. In the meantime, fans of Obsidian’s RPGs can look forward to theOuter Worlds 2direct, which is set to immediately follow theXbox Games Showcase on June 8. Fans should be able to expect an extensive deep dive into the sci-fi sequel and perhaps even a solid release date.
