Summary
Bayonettacreator Hideki Kamiya once wished to continue the series with a new trilogy before leaving PlatinumGames. Kamiya’s impact on the third-person action genre is well-documented, with his tenure at Capcom alone leading to the creation of landmark titles likeResident Evil 2, the firstDevil May Cry, andOkami. In 2006, Kamiya departed from Capcom to form PlatinumGames, with one of his first projects being 2009’sBayonetta. Players took control of the titular Umbra Witch, who used both conventional weaponry and the magic power of her hair to battle supernatural enemies.
Bayonetta’s success led to two sequels, both of which were published by Nintendo andreleased exclusively on Nintendo consoles. They were both as well-received as their predecessor, and Bayonetta herself would make special guest appearances in other games likeThe Wonderful 101andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. 2023 saw the release ofBayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, a prequel detailing Cerza’s early days as a witch in training.
MoreBayonettagames are possible, but Hideki Kamiya’s departure from PlatinumGames in 2023 means he likely won’t be involved in any future installments. In a recent YouTube video (as reported byNintendo Everything), Kamiya dispelled rumors that he wanted toend the series withBayonetta 3, stating that he would have liked to begin a new chapter in the Umbra Witch’s monster-slaying saga. He even mused that this could have been the start of a brand-new trilogy of games, one that might have changed up the hack-and-slash action gameplay that fans were familiar with from the first three titles.
Hideki Kamiya Wanted to Start a ‘New Chapter’ With Next Bayonetta Game
Hideki Kamiya has also commented on some of his other projects, including some that didn’t see the light of day likeScalebound. He has also expressed interest inreturning to theDevil May Cryseriesto remake the first game, a timely prospect given the success of the recentDevil May Cryanimated series on Netflix.
In the meantime, Kamiya is working on the long-awaitedOkamisequel as part of Clovers Inc., a new studio he formed that is comprised of many of the developers of the original 2006 classic. Only time will tell how the future ofBayonettafares without the original creator, as there is currently no word of a new game as of this writing. Kamiya certainly had some ideas for continuing the series, which he says ispart of a connected universewith the rest of his most noted gaming projects.
