Summary
Being able to take to the skies during a fight can be incredibly useful for getting out of a dangerous situation, though only a handful of characters inMy Hero Academiahave been lucky enough to possess Quirks that are based around using and manipulating the air. While being able to fly is one thing, some of theseMy Hero Academiacharacters have been able to utilize their air-based Quirks in all kinds of unique and creative ways, making their abilities a real joy to watch in action.
Most of the time, such Quirks will be commonly used to avoid a dangerous attack, but some have also honed their abilities to such a degree that they can be used offensively too, as a way to initiate flanks and score a few sneaky jabs when the enemy least expects it. When it comes to which are the most reliable and useful in combat, here is how the air-based Quirks seen throughoutMy Hero Academiastack up against one another.
7Air Walk
Ranged Heroes And Villains Can Reach Dangerous Vantage Points With Air Walk
While All For One has been seen using Air Walk on a few occasions to tower over his opponents from up above, both literally and metaphorically, Lady Nagant is the villain whom the Quirk has been most associated. As the name implies, Air Walk gifts the user with the ability to walk across the air itself, as if they are stepping on invisible platforms to take to their destination.
For Nagant, who is the best sniper in all of Japan thanks to her deadlyRifle Quirk, this was an extremely useful second ability which she would use to great effect in her epic showdown with Midoriya. However, it does require a good amount of concentration to work, so while a handy resource, it’s not without its faults, and also won’t be as useful for heroes and villains who are more close-quartered.
6Solid Air
Tsuburaba Can Create Durable Barriers In The Blink Of An Eye Thanks To His Odd Quirk
Tsuburaba only gets to throw out his Solid Air Quirk a handful of times throughout the story, but it’s been shown to be an incredibly strong defensive ability that can easily stop a foe in their tracks. By using his breath, Tsuburaba can create a solid wall from the air, which was so sturdy that it even managed to hold back an enraged Bakugo early on in the story.
Though the size of the shield depends entirely on how much air Tsubara has in his lungs, the fact that it can be deployed so quickly makes it ideal for holding off highly mobile villains who excel at quick hit-and-run tactics. Simple, straightforward, but all so effective in battle, Solid Air is apowerful Quirkwhich often goes under the radar for many people due to its user being a pretty irrelevant character within the wider story.
5Float
Getting From A To B Is Made Easy When Float Is Involved
As aPro-Hero, civilians could always rely on Nana to help them out whenever they found themselves being targeted by a group of villains, but to reach her destination as quickly as possible, she would rely heavily on her Float Quirk. While she did also have One For All at this point to boost her overall speed, Float was the Quirk that gave Nana the ability to travel through the sky, with Midoriya also coming to make good use of it when the Quirk was eventually passed down to him long after Nana’s gone.
There aren’t any significant drawbacks to Float, but it’s the heroes who will benefit from it most, considering it gives them a way to avoid the collateral damage that malicious villains are never afraid to cause on a ground level during an intense battle.
4Zero Gravity
Uraraka’s Powerful Quirk Can Be Used For Both Offense And Defense
In the first few story arcs ofMy Hero Academia, it’s clear Uraraka has trouble using her Quirk, Zero Gravity, primarily because floating in the sky for more than a few seconds wouldcause her to feel sick and nauseous. With a lot of hard work and training, Uraraka would realize the true underlying potential of Zero Gravity, especially in rescue missions, where she can elevate several people in the air at once to keep them safe from danger.
With that being said, as Toga proved when she mercilessly killed Curious after her transformation, Zero Gravity can also be pretty deadly too, making it extremely versatile, and a Quirk which can be trained to be used in a bunch of unique ways to overcome a deadly foe. This isn’t even mentioning the Quirk’s Awakening, which can flatten an entire group of villains in mere seconds when used correctly.
3Jet
Even An Old Geezer Like Gran Torino Can Still Move At Lightning Speed Thanks To Jet
By pushing out air from the soles of his feet, Gran Torino can shoot himself around his environment so fast that his enemy can’t keep track of him once he starts shooting off. As someone who has been a Pro-Hero for many years, having been a partner to Nana andmentor to All Might, Gran Torino has had plenty of time to learn how to use Jet to its full potential, quickly earning a reputation as one of the fastest heroes who ever lived as a result.
Midoriya finds this out only moments after meeting Torino for the first time, where the old geezer would easily outmaneuver him by bouncing off the walls and catching him out with a sneak attack. The fact that Jet doesn’t require too much focus or physical strength from the user for it to work also earns it some bonus points, though being able to control its immense speed does still take a lot of work.
2Air Cannon
A Giant Blast Off Air Which Can Protect Against Even The Strongest Of Attacks
Though it’s not known exactly who possessed Air Cannon before it was snatched away by All For One, what is clear is that it’s certainly not a nice attack to be on the receiving end of. During All For One’s first battle in the series with All Might, the former uses Air Cannon to hold back many of his rival’s powerful attacks, and later on, Shigaraki would even use it to help him avoidEndeavor’s explosive fire abilities, which is far from an easy feat.
Keeping an enemy at a safe distance is one thing, but the sheer destructive force of even a single blast of Air Cannon is more than enough to blow a hole through anyone who stands a little too close for comfort. Unfortunately, Air Cannon is only ever owned by villains in the series, as it would be handy for a hero who can deflect any incoming projectiles that might be heading toward a group of civilians.
1Whirlwind
Inasa Can Sweep Up Entire Armies Of Villains By Manipulating His Gigantic Whirlwinds
Inasa doesn’t just use or manipulate air; he has full control over it, though the most common way he will use this fascinating ability is to create giant and chaotic whirlwinds. Inasa puts the incredible power of his Quirk on full display when he wipes out a staggering 120 students in the Provisional License Exam in one fell swoop, with this single scene making it crystal clear why Inasa is considered the top student of Shiketsu High School.
What makes Whirlwind so strong as a Quirk is the area of effect, considering Inasa can essentially control an entire battlefield without even needing to break a sweat. Inasa is a character who many fans agreedeserved a lot more screentimethan he ended up getting, but considering how overpowered his Quirk is, it’s easier to understand why Horikoshi decided to keep him on the sidelines so that he doesn’t end up constantly stealing the spotlight from his hero allies.
