Transformershasplenty of great storiesthat span across many different mediums. Throughout them, we see both Optimus Prime and Megatron in new lights and boasting different levels of power. In some of them, Megatron and Optimus Prime stand toe-to-toe with one another and are seen as an equal match.
Other times depictMegatron as the stronger of the two, with Optimus needing to rise up against a superior foe. However, not every victory goes to Optimus Prime. There are numerous instances where victory goes to Megatron. This list will focus purely on actual clashes between Megatron and Optimus Prime, and not successful domination settings such asAll Hail Megatron.
6Transformers: Armada
Optimus is Helpless to Stop Megatron’s Decisive Attack and Survives through Intervention
Megatron and Optimus square off, with Megatron pressing his attack against Optimus Prime, who is backed up against a fissure in the ground. Optimus is unarmed, while Megatron wields a sword of energy. Megatron raises his sword, while all Optimus can do is shield the minicon in front of him from the impending attack.
However, Megatron’s attack is blocked by the Skyboom Shield. This deus ex machina is through the action of Sparkplug, the minicon that Optimus protects. If not for Sparkplug locking onto the shield, Optimus would have fallen to Megatron in this fight.
5Transformers: Prime
Megatron Overwhelms Optimus and Pins Him To the Ground
InTransformers: Prime, Megatron aims to restorehis master, Unicron, to full power. This will require a great deal of dark energon, but the Autobots led by Optimus Prime thwart his ambitions throughout the series. Throughout their fight in this episode, Optimus seems to possess the upper hand. This goes as far as having Megatron on his back while Optimus continues to advance.
However, Megatron turns the tide after catching the blade that Optimus attempts to finish him with. He throws Optimus Prime’s words back at him, shatters his blade, and begins his own onslaught and attacks. Optimus falls against Megatron who raises a blade of his own as Optimus lies helpless. The only reason Optimus is able to survive is due to his allies intervening by teleporting directly into the fight and dragging him through a portal to safety.
4Transformers (G1)
A 1v1 Duel, Which Optimus Loses
Megatron challenges Optimus Prime to a one-on-one duel, which Optimus accepts. Neither side is allowed help, and the loser will take his force and leave the planet in exile. However, Optimus is unaware of the fact that Megatron has given himself a massive power boost before the duel.
Megatron has beaten me according to Cybertron law. To violate that law would destroy our honor.
Megatron completely overwhelms Optimus who complies with the terms of the duel, stating that he and the Autobost will leave Earth forever. After learning that Megatron’s power boost comes from the other Decepticons, it is no longer considered a one-on-one fight, and the Autobots retaliate.
3The Transformers: Autocracy
Megatron Defeats Optimus, Only to See Him Rise Stronger Than Before
The Transformers: Autocracytells the origin story of Megatron and Optimus Prime, who at the time is still Orion Pax. The two of them agree to an alliance to end the tyrannical reign of Zeta Prime. Megatron slays Zeta while Optimus tellshis ally Ironhideto send in Ratchet and his engineering team to assist them.
However, Megatron takes this opportunity to blast a hole through the chest of Orion Pax. Followed by casting him into the pit before him. However, while this would leave Orion broken in the depths of the Undergrid, it would lead him toobtain the Matrix of Leadershipand rise more powerful than before.
This would serve as the source material for the Transformers One film.
2Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Optimus is Outnumbered and Falls, Despite Putting Up an Impressive Fight
Megatron returns and once again clashes with Optimus Prime. In the first film, Megatron has Optimus at his mercy but is defeated by the intervention of the human Sam Witwicky using the Allspark. However, this time the two clash with the odds on Megatron’s side. Megatron and his minions face off against a seemingly unstoppable Optimus Prime.
Optimus is impaled by Megatron from behindand falls in battle. The events of the film lead to Sam obtaining the Matrix of Leadership, which is used to revive Optimus Prime, but this does not mitigate the fact Megatron defeated Optimus.

Megatron Achieves Definitive Victory Over Optimus Prime
Megatron and Optimus duke it out, with each receiving damage before Optmus gains the upper hand. This leads Megatron to devise a plan that has him seemingly begging for Optimus to spare his life. This is merely a ploy, one that Optimus does not feel compassion for. Optimus expresses his disappointment, but this gives Megatron enough time to arm himself.
While Optimus could have shot Megatron first and achieved total victory, Hot Rod jumps onto Megatron. Preventing Optimus from firing his weapon. This allows Megatron to take Hot Rod hostage and relentlessly gun down Optimus Prime. Megatron himself is severely damaged but goes on to berebuilt more powerful than ever before. Optimus on the other hand, succumbs to his injuries. However, unlike the live-action films, he does not come back.
