Summary

Before the Shinju clones come into being inBoruto: Two Blue Vortex, Code is poised as the next major villain that Boruto and the rest of Konoha need to overcome. With the power he wields, he has the potential to fulfill Isshiki Otsutsuki’s will, especially after Amado removed his limiters. Yet still, Code struggles to escape from his fate as a pawn or a puppet who’s constantly manipulated and used by others inBoruto.

Understandably, many fans are upset and disappointed over Code’s incompetence in Boruto. Initially, there were high expectations for him due to the weight of his role, but seeing him repeatedly exploited by other characters, including the likes of Eida, Daemon, and now, theShinju clones, for their personal interests, many fans are speculating whether he would be doomed to be a pawn forever.

Daemon from Boruto

Code’s Inescapable Fate in Boruto

A Devoted Tool for Isshiki Otsutsuki

Among theinner members of Kara, Code stands out as Isshiki Otsutsuki’s most loyal servant, harboring an unusually intense religious devotion to the Otsutsuki Clan. Not only does he worship Isshiki as his personal god, but he also carries his legacy in the form of the white karma. Shortly after Isshiki’s death, Code immediately emerges as his successor, vowing to fulfill his will and exact revenge on those who wronged him.

“I am beyond humbled that you appeared before me, but unfortunately, I cannot serve as a receptacle of your soul."—Code to Isshiki

From that day forward, Code’s actions and decisions are driven by his desire to carry out another character’s ideology. Instead of carving his own path, he follows in Isshiki’s footsteps, with his plan tocultivate a God Tree, consume a chakra fruit, and eventually become a full-fledged Otsutsuki. In essence, Code’s identity becomes completely entwined with Isshiki’s, leaving little room for his own individuality.

Code’s Exploitation Continues

Eida and Daemon’s Manipulation

TheBorutomanga initially teases Code as the next great villain, seemingly equipped with all the qualities needed to be consideredan Otsutsuki-level threat. However, none of these amount to anything and his potential quickly falls flat as he continues to be exploited by new faces in the manga. Eida and Daemon, the two cyborgs resting in Boro’s facility, effortlessly overpower and outmaneuver him not long after their awakening.

“I’m sorry, Code, I wasn’t ignoring you. You see, I’ve been asleep a long time so I’m worried I have bad breath."—Eida to Code

Perhaps the only good thing that comes out of his short and shallow alliance with Eida and Daemon is the removal of his limiters. Other than that, his alliance with the cyborg siblings is best remembered for Eida using him to get in touch with Kawaki and Daemon treating him like a toy. To make matters worse,Amado once again manipulates the eventsbehind the scenes and takes advantage of the situation. In the end, Code is left with no choice but to part ways and start over from scratch.

Enter the Shinju Clones

Code’s Plan Backfires

By the end of theBoruto: Naruto Next Generationsmanga, Code has a promising plan in mind and that is to use the countless claw grimes at his disposal to attack Konoha and killthose involved in Isshiki’s death. This plan backfires, as the Shinju clones come into being after they awaken self-awareness thanks to Code. On top of that, Code no longer holds the upper hand in a fight against Boruto, further undermining his position as a major threat.

Once again, Code is being used by another character in the series. This time, it’s Jura who, despite owing Code his self-awareness, calls him a clown with an inescapable fate. Most likely, Jura will not stay true to his deal with Code, who believes that Jura will allow him toconsume the chakra fruitand become an Otsutsuki after he successfully kills Boruto and Kashin Koji.

Is Code Doomed to Be a Pawn Forever?

Code’s Chance at Redemption

For now, it’s fair to assume that Code will most likely remain asJura’s pawn to fulfill his desiresinBoruto: Two Blue Vortex. With the current direction of the manga, there’s a strong chance that Code will be betrayed and outclassed yet again, especially after he agreed to the deal with Jura. It’s a shame how his character has always been exploited, yet he never grows or develops from it.

“You’ve got some nerve to tell me that you’re going to spare my life!"—Code to Boruto

For Code to redeem himself and break free from the shackles that bind him, it might be better to go back to where it all began. Perhaps he needs to reject Isshiki’s will and legacy and seek a new path that is entirely his own. Make no mistake, Code could still pursue the Divine Tree and take revenge on those who wronged him, but this time, he could be driven by pure self-determination rather than vengeance for another. There’s still a chance for Code to escape his fate, as the story inBoruto: Two Blue Vortexis far from over.
