Game of Thronesis a series that doesn’t shy away from its fair share of shocking deaths. After all, violence is a huge USP of the series, and surprising swerves are another. This combines to make for some brutal and unexpected scenes that will leave fans with their jaws on the floor.
While some characters deserve these deaths inGame of Thrones, others are more likable. This makes their fates harder to swallow as fans are forced to witness yet another favorite character bite the dust.
8Ramsay Bolton
Fans Wish His Brutal Death Didn’t Happen Off-Screen
Ramsay Bolton is one of the easiest characters to hate inGame of Thrones. The way he treats Sansa and Theon is simply horrifying, which is why fans love it when Sansa makes him suffer a poetic death at the hands of his dreaded hounds.
It’s a shame that viewers don’t get to see just how badly Ramsay is mauled, but perhaps that’s for the best. Their imagination can run wild as they assume the various ways Ramsay’s dogs turned on their master and brutalized him.
7Joffrey Baratheon
Choking To Death Was Too Good For This Horrible Character
Giventhe sheer number of hateable characters in the series, it’s impressive that Joffrey manages to eclipse all of them when it comes to his despicable nature. A spoiled king who did not deserve the throne at all, his needlessly brutal actions are a huge part of why House Stark and House Lannister’s relations were fractured for good.
This is why fans love it when Joffrey is poisoned during his wedding, rendering him unable to breathe as he painfully chokes to death. As prolonged and painful as this death may be, the hate for Joffrey was so intense that fans wanted him to suffer an even worse fate.
6Eddard “Ned” Stark
Admitted To A Crime He Didn’t Commit And Didn’t Even Get Spared, Which Was A Part Of The Agreement
Ned Stark is one of the most noble characters in the series. However, his insistence on being honorable is a huge part of his undoing, since the man couldn’t play the political gameas shrewdly as Cerseiand was left with the short end of the stick after his friend’s demise.
To make things worse, Joffrey surprised everyone by ordering Ned Stark’s death by beheading in front of everyone. Cersei couldn’t afford to let the new king look weak in front of his people, and was forced to let things transpire as a valuable political prisoner was turned into a headless corpse… and this was after he agreed to accept the blame for false charges in exchange for his life.
5Tywin Lannister
His Hate For Tyrion Is Rewarded With A Death On The Privy
There’s no denying that Tywin is one of the smartest characters in the series, but he had one glaring weakness. His pride prevented him from acknowledging Tyrion as a son worthy of his attention,which eventually led to his doom.
Moments before escaping prison, Tyrion sees Tywin in the privy and talks down to him before killing his father in the most humiliating manner possible. He was forced to take his last breath while relieving himself, which made for a rather amusing sight.
4Shireen Baratheon
A Sweet, Innocent Girl Who Is Burned To Death In A Heartless Scene
Shireen Baratheon is one of the sweetest children in the series. Unfortunately, she was born to one of the stupidest parents in the Seven Kingdoms, who were somehow convinced by Melisandre to sacrifice their child for what was stated to be the greater good.
Watching Shireen scream as she was burned alive at the pyrewas heartbreaking, especially since her parents just watched on instead of stopping this farce. The true insult came when Stannis lost the war anyway, causing him to become Brienne’s victim as she avenged Renly’s death.
3Viserys Targaryen
Gets A Golden Crown After Disrespecting Khal Drogo One Too Many Times
The Targaryens were on their last legs at the start ofGame of Thrones, and Viserys was desperate to regain the Iron Throne. He signed off his sister as a bridefor Khal Drogo, only to find out that he was being constantly disrespected by the Dothraki.
One night, his drunken arrogance rubbed the Khal the wrong way. Drogo decided to punish Viserys in the most brutal manner possible, melting some valuable gold and giving Viserys the golden crown he wanted in one of the most brutal deaths in the series.
2Oberyn Martell
Oberyn Martell made a strong impression from the get-go, with Pedro Pascal’s invigorated performance adding a ton of suave to this character. Dorne instantly became relevant because of this character, who participated in a trial by combat against the Mountain, where he was fighting for Tyrion’s life.
Unfortunately, the prince got cocky and didn’t realize that the Mountain would still be kicking even after being poisoned. He was knocked down and his head was crushed to the point where it exploded in a shower of gore, cementing his loss and Tyrion’s fate. To make matters worse, the Mountain confessed to his evil crimes committed against Oberyn’s sister while murdering him.

Numerous Favorite Characters Bite The Dust
The Red Wedding is one of the greatest moments inGame of Throneshistory, regardless of how brutal it was. Unlike the books, where players could speed-read through this traumatic ordeal, viewers were forced through every excruciating second as their favorite characters were stabbed to death.
Talisa’s fate was the worst one by far, getting stabbed in her belly several times before she bled out. All the other drunk Starks were shot down, and Robb was executed right in front of Catelyn’s eyes as her throat was slit. It didn’t even end there, as Robb’s head was put on a wolf and a wolf’s head was put on Robb’s body.
