Summary
It seems as though aChrono Triggerremake may be in the works at Square Enix.Chrono Triggeris one of the most critically-acclaimed RPGs of all time, and is often considered one of the best games ever made, period. DespiteChrono Triggerbeing so popular, the game has largely been left alone by Square Enix. It’s received enhanced ports to various platforms, but it remains unavailable on modern video game consoles.
Chrono Triggerwas ported to PC in 2018, but it’s been dormant ever since. In the meantime, Square Enix has been reviving some of its classic JRPGs through remasters and remakes, making dramatic upgrades to the originalDragon Questgames and the old-schoolFinal Fantasytitles. Many fans have been hoping forChrono Triggerto get similar treatment, and now there is hope that such a project may actually exist.
Those in attendance at a Comic-Con panel in Napels featuringChrono TriggerandDragon Questdeveloper Yuji Horii have claimed that Horii accidentally let slip the existence of aChrono Triggerremake. The claim is that Horii accidentally mentioned aChrono Triggerremake, had someone whisper in his ear, and then, according to Reddit user LawfulnessSure125(citing a claim on another forum), “covered his mouth as if he’d just said something he shouldn’t have.” Reddit user TheFishyOne, who was in attendance, confirmed this account, saying that they were among those who cheered at the mention of aChrono Triggerremake. TheFishyOne added that the translator at the event asked Horii for confirmation, to which they were told, “You heard nothing.” We have been unable to independently verify these claims.
Chrono Trigger Remake May Be Happening
This is far from 100% confirmation that aChrono Triggerremakeis happening, but it wouldn’t be surprising at all if such a project is eventually announced. After all, Square Enix has been remastering and remaking its classic games as of late, and with the originalChrono Triggerunavailable on the latest game consoles, it seems like an obvious candidate for a remaster or remake.
The only question is what scope aChrono Triggerremaster or remake would tackle. While something on the scale of theFinal Fantasy 7remake project is possible, a more likely scenario is that aChrono Triggerremake would take its cues from theDragon QuestHD-2D games. For the uninitiated, Square Enix has been revamping the OGDragon Questgames with its eye-popping HD-2D art style.Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remakereleased to strong reviews, and fans can look forward toDragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remakelater this year.
