The third installment in Paradox Interactive’s hit grand strategy franchise will celebrate its fifth anniversary on September 1. However, the Swedish developer-publisher has no plans for a sequel and is instead focused on continuously expanding and improving its 2020 title. So far in 2025, Paradox has released multipleCrusader Kings 3updates and DLC packs, and it has confirmed plans to launch even more before the end of the year.
Continuing this trend, the company debuted anotherCrusader Kings 3update on Tuesday, May 13. Identified by version number 1.16.2, this release includes 118 changes in total. Among them are 17 new gameplay features, including the Holden Lineage Trait, which replaces the old house modifier affecting the Greatest Khans and descendants thereof. Another novelty introduced with this update concernsCrusader Kings 3Confederations, which players can now ask to join rather than simply waiting for an invitation.
On a similar note, activities now have a Confederation Member guest pool, allowing members of the player’s Confederation to get invited. The 1.16.2 update also revises some ofCrusader Kings 3’s conquest mechanicsby allowing truces to be bypassed when dominating a Title—a change that allows for quicker expansion. Other gameplay novelties introduced in the new patch include a Reindeer internal yurt building, unique names for external yurt levels, and revised Tribal era innovations, which now provide Nomad-specific bonuses. Steppe cultures have been updated with more accurate art that better reflects their region, religion, and government, while Almos Arpad received the First King of the Confederation modifier.
The 1.16.2 patch addresses 61 bugs, ranging from UI softlocks and minor tooltip inaccuracies to gameplay hiccups like nomads being charged gold for reducing Men-at-arms size and even receiving double herds back in some weird edge cases. Co-monarch titles will no longer display as ridiculous-looking “co-co-co-[title]” chains, and tributary contracts have been made to behave more consistently during status changes and save loads. The newCrusader Kings 3updatealso fixes some issues with cultural traditions, corrects how tributaries and vassals contribute levies to their suzerains, and lowers the frequency of AI-controlled groups demanding Paizas.
Over a dozen balancing changes are part of the 1.16.2 update, together with a handful of interface changes. The PC version ofCrusader Kings 3also received some modding changes, including a way to control the maximum size of horde riders regardless of any Men-at-arms modifiers that a character might have.
