Summary
The in-developmentCyberpunk 2077sequel could be leaving the mean streets of Night City behind in favor of a brand-new setting. While the originalCyberpunk 2077took some time to win gamers over, it eventually became a major success for CD Projekt Red, especially after theCyberpunk: Edgerunnersanime brought more attention to the game in 2022 and thePhantom Libertystory DLC was released back in 2023.Now, CDPR is working on aCyberpunk 2077sequel under the codename “Project Orion,” which was announced in the fall of 2022.
So far, very little is known aboutProject Orion. Rumors have suggested that itsofficial name could beCyberpunk 2, and job listings have hinted at multiplayer being added to the mix.Cyberpunk 2’s plot and setting have also sparked ample speculation about whether the sequel will follow the story of V fromCyberpunk 2077or feature a completely new protagonist - and if it decides to do the latter, which of the first game’s multiple endings will be made canon.
Mike Pondsmith, the creator oftheCyberpunktabletop RPG franchisethatCyberpunk 2077is based on, recently talked about the upcoming sequel at the 2025 Digital Dragons conference in Poland. According toGamePressure, Pondsmith said that players will visit “another city” in Project Orion, but quickly added that he couldn’t share any more details at this time.
Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Could Introduce New City Setting
Interestingly enough, some in-game posters in the originalCyberpunk 2077mention Chicago and how close it is to Night City, and this has naturally sparked rumors that Project Orion could take place in a future version of the real-life city. Other rumors have suggested that theCyberpunk 2077sequel could leave the planet Earth entirely, as a planned DLC for the first game would have taken V to a colony on the moon.
It should be pointed out that Pondsmith’s comments aboutCyberpunk 2077’s sequel only mentioned “visiting” a new city, so Project Orion might actually be set in multiple locations, including a return to Night City. It also seems like the comment slipped out accidentally, so fans shouldn’t take it as fact just yet. There is currently no release window forCyberpunk 2077’s sequel, and it is just one of many projects that CD Projekt Red has in the works. OtherCDPR projects includeThe Witcher 4, a remake of the originalWitchergame, aWitchermultiplayer title, and a project based on a brand-new IP.
