Summary
There has been no concrete update about aWonder Womanlive-action movie after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the DC Studios. However, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and president David Zaslav just spoke about a potential project involving Diana Prince.
Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot, is one of the most successful films in theDC Extended Universe(DCEU). Gadot debuted as the Amazon Warrior inBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice(2016) before starring in her solo filmWonder Woman(2017) and reprising the role inWonder Woman 1984(2020). Gadot’s performance was well-received, with many praising her for successfully portraying the female superhero. A third movie was in development with Gadot and Patty Jenkins returning to star and direct the film, respectively. However, it was canceled in late 2022 shortly after Gunn and Safran became co-CEOs and co-Chairmen at DC Studios because the pair wanted to reboot the DCEU.Henry Cavill’sSupermansequel was also shelved because they decided to cast a younger lead. David Corenswet plays the titular role in the new and upcomingSupermanfilm, which is due in July. There’s not much update about the nextWonder Womanfilm, but Zaslav has just confirmed that it’s on their radar.
Zaslav spoke about the upcoming DCU’s projects as part of Warner Bros.' (WB) Q1 2025 earnings call. According to him, WB will focus on the other popular superheroes fromDC Comics, those that guarantee success and he mentioned four, includingWonder WomanandBatman, suggesting new actors will soon be announced to portray those characters. Of course, this is not surprising since Wonder Woman and Batman are part of DC Comics' “Trinity.” There will always be room for the two superheroes in theDC Universe, especially when Gunn and Safran are already plotting a decade plan. Here’s what Zaslav said (via The Direct):
You look at the major characters that James Gunn and Peter Safran are developing with their ten-year plan around DC, that is to build asset value for us globally, everywhere in the world, Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Supergirl. So those are we look at those as big asset builders and big differentiators.
ConsideringWonder Woman’sfuture, fans can’t help but speculate who will carry the mantle after Gadot’s exit.Moon KnightstarMay Calamawyoffers to play the character. According to the actress, if Gunn wanted her for the role, she would play it. Several actresses, including Eiza González, Adria Arjona, and Jessica Green, were also rumored to potentially playWonder Woman. Many social media users campaign for Green because, for them, she has the beauty, physique, and height. Gunn hasn’t announced any casting for the role, but previously confirmed hewould not hold open casting calls. The filmmaker doesn’t want this approach because it attracts thousands of auditions, and it becomes too exhausting to filter them. However, Gunn was confident with their casting strategy, even saying they only hired the best actors.
Zaslav’s statement aboutWonder Womanis promising.Wonder Womanis one of the favorite figures in DC Comics and, needless to say, the most popular female superhero in the universe. Fans will always be waiting for a new face to carry the mantle after Gadot’s successful portrayal. The Disney CEO seems to hint that aWonder Womanproject is in the pipeline aside fromParadise Lost, but Gunn and Safran are probably just not ready to announce it. This is great news becauseWonder Womanfans have been clamoring to see her again on the big screen after Gadot’sWonder Woman 3was canceled. The next major announcement forWonder Womanis probably the official casting of the titular character and everyone’s all for it.
