Summary
Destiny 2’s recent reveal livestream for the upcoming Edge of Fate expansion was a banger, chock-full of information about what it will be bringing to the base game when it launches on July 15. Bungie spent close to an hour going over the significant changes and new features that will be introduced with The Edge of Fate, with some of the highlights being the new planet Kepler, some planetary exploration and combat abilities, customizable difficulty options, and much more. However, while The Edge of Fate was meant to be the star of the show,Destiny 2had a big surprise waiting near the end of the livestream that stole the spotlight.
WithDestiny 2’s new direction seeing it launching two expansions each year, The Edge of Fate won’t be alone in 2025. Towards the end of the expansions reveal livestream, Bungie gave fans a sneak peek atDestiny 2’s upcoming Renegades expansion, but it wasn’t just the thrill of yet another expansion coming to the game this year that made it exciting. What really stood out about Renegades that The Edge of Fate didn’t have is that it is aStar Wars-themed expansion, complete with lightsabers and themed armor sets. In light of the fact that it seemsDestiny 2has now moved from small-scale crossovers to expansion-sized crossovers, Renegades could set a precedent for the game’s future.
Destiny 2: Renegades' Expansion-Level Crossover Could Set a Precedent
Destiny 2 Has Done Small-Scale Crossovers for Many Years
Destiny 2has long done small-scalecollaborations with other IPs, many of which have pulled players back into the game for a brief period. These crossovers are generally limited to ornament sets for armor, weapons, ships, Ghosts, and Sparrows, but they are enticing for fans of franchises beyondDestiny 2.
Destiny 2even recently did aStar Warscrossoverthat featured relevant armor sets for each class, a Death Star-themed Ghost shell, aStar Wars-inspired Sparrow, a ship, emotes, and finishers. As it was with every crossover before it, these items were available for purchase through the Eververse store using Silver.
Destiny 2: Renegades Could Be a Sign That Crossovers Are Going Bigger
What is so unique aboutDestiny 2’s Renegades expansion is that it doesn’t represent a small-scale crossover like those the game has done in the past. Instead, the entire expansion is themed afterStar Wars, though the full extent of that, especially when it comes to the game’s narrative and worldbuilding, is currently unknown. Based on the teaser trailer alone, it seems likeDestiny 2is bringing many elements ofStar Warsinto its world — not just cosmetics. However, it should be noted that what was shown inDestiny 2’s Renegades teaser traileris subject to change.
According toDestiny 2assistant game director Robbie Stevens, “Renegades takes the space western vibe and aesthetic that isStar Wars, and it puts it through thatDestinylens.”
More or less, given how extensive Renegades’Star Warscrossover is,Destiny 2players may be able to expect crossovers in the game on a much broader level than they’ve seen in the past. It appears thatDestiny 2is essentially taking the identity ofStar Warsand putting aDestinycoat of paint on it, so it could easily do that with other IPs in the future. Perhaps fans will finally get thoseSkyrim,Dead Space,Doctor Who, andCyberpunk 2077crossoversthey’ve been requesting for some time in the future, only in a much more transformative way.
