Summary

Set on an Australian outback-inspired island, James Bendon’s indie gem,Dinkum, combines elementsofAnimal CrossingandStardew Valleyto create one of the best cozy titles on Steam. Charged with building an idyllic city from the ground up, players will complete a number of tasks to entice residents to stay at their island getaway or earn dinks, the in-game currency, to construct new buildings.

One of the avenues players can take for the latter isfarming.Like many cozy titles before it,Dinkumcomes with a fleshed-outfarming system, allowing players to live out their tractor-hauling dreams. Alternatively, farming can just be a source of ingredients for players to use when cooking recipes that will give them buffs throughout the day. Either way, it’s a core part ofDinkum, so players will want to get familiar with the best crops they can make use of.

Thoughriceis not as profitable as other crops on this list, it’s still a viable option for players' plots. Since it can be planted in a body of water, rice, unlike other crops, doesn’t need to be watered every day. This comes in especially handyduring the earlygame, as players, without access to sprinklers, will have to water each plant individually.

This isn’t the worst thing in the world, considering the game also allows players to upgrade their watering cans to cover wider areas, but when planting large fields, tending to crops without the aid of sprinklers becomes a tedious and time-consuming job. With rice, players can leave their crops to grow on their own, using that saved time to pursue other goals.

Corn, similar to rice, is not as profitable as other crops on this list (especially when considering the cost of each seed), yet it comes with other benefits that make up for its sale value.Dinkumallows players to purchase and raise their own animals, but, as one would expect, those animals need feeding. Though players can acquireanimal foodfrom Irwin’s shop or by placing grass seeds in a grain mill, using corn is the most efficient method.

Where five grass seeds will get the player one animal food, corn will give them ten. Meaning, after a player’s first corn harvest, they’re likely to have enpugh animal food for quite some time. Additionally, corn can be harvested multiple times, allowing players some flexibility with how they want to use their harvest.

For players looking to keep their farming simple by selling their harvested crops straight to one of the game’s vendors, onionsare a solid option. With a seed cost of540 dinksand a minimum yield of three, players are looking at an810 dinkprofit per planted onion. Though there are other crops in the game with better profit margins, onions take the lead by being plantablein multiple seasons(Summer and Spring) as well as being included in a number of the game’s cooking recipes.

Wheat and sugarcaneare, on their own, still essential crops for players to keep on their farms. Able to be turned into flour and sugar, respectively, both crops are required for a lot of thegame’s cooking recipes, the most important being Fairy Bread.

With wheat and sugarcane being fairly inexpensive and farmed all year round, they are easily accessible and capable of being mass-produced, which in turn means Fairy Bread is too. Though the process of making the bread can feel tedious, with ingredients having to first go through a grain mill, a profit of1208 dinksper batch baked makes the ordeal worth it.

Though the crops bundled into this entry are each profitable on their own, when combined, they produce a more high-value dish: thePrime Roast.A recipe consisting ofpotato, carrot, kale, green bean, pumpkinand a bit of alpha meat, the Prime Roast is a dish that takes quite a lot of work to be made effective.

A year-long investment, each crop comes with its own seasonal restrictions, meaning players will haveto plan whento plant their seeds and take into account the number of days they take to grow. While veterans of games likeStardew Valleywill already be familiar with this level of preparation, it could be a bit overwhelming for new players to get their heads around. The effort is worth it, however, as, by the end of an in-game year, players will be able to sell each plate of food for12,994 dinks. Like other recipes in the game, players can choose to keep the Prime Roast to eat and gain buffs. Alternatively, once players get her on their islands, they can sell the dish to Sheila for 2.5 times its original value.

Vegemite in all but name,Mighty Spreadis a jar-shaped crop that players can sell for120,000 dinks! But, as one might expect, with a sale valuelike that, finding mighty seeds can be quite tricky.

Neither found on the main island nor sold by any vendor, mighty seeds are acquirable after players have unlocked access to theDeep Mines and the Undergrove. In the subterranean areas, players will have to seek out treasure rooms and their chests, which have a chance of containing mighty seeds. Other than that, players can also find them in buried chests throughout theIsland Reef, a biome that can only be accessed through theAirportbuilding.
