Final Destinationis a supernatural horror thriller praised for its inventive, suspenseful and often gruesome depictions of death. The first movie in the franchise,Final Destination, was directed by James Wong and released in 2000. A sequel,Final Destination 2, was released in 2003. Fans love it so much that it spawned three more films —Final Destination 3(2006),The Final Destination(2009), andFinal Destination 5(2011). Its sixth movie,Final Destination Bloodlines, will soon premiere and its directors shared their experience working with one of the horror icons.
Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky sat down for an interview with GamesRadar days before the premiere of their horror film,Final Destination Bloodlines. The franchise has featured several deaths throughout its entire run and more will be seen in the upcoming movie. Last year, one of its actors who starred in the very firstFinal Destinationfilm passed away. The duo got candid about working withTony Todd, who appeared in three of the first five movies —Final Destination,Final Destination 2andFinal Destination 5— beforemaking his return as the mysterious mortician William Bludworth inBloodlines. Stein said they were honored to work with Todd, whom he called a “legend.” Aside from starring inFinal Destination, Todd was known as Candyman — a ghostly killer with a tragic backstory. He played Candyman in three films —Candyman(1992),Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh(1995), andCandyman: Day of the Dead(1999). He also appeared in several horror movies, includingWishmaster(1997),Hatchet II(2010),Sushi Girl(2012),Hell Fest(2018), andLeprechaun Returns(2018). He added that they were aware of his health condition at the time and were initially unsure if he would participate. However, when the actor learned about it, he reportedly told them not to write out his character. “I need to be in this movie,” Todd reportedly told them. Stein said they worked closely with Todd and even plotted how his character would bid goodbye to the audience because they thought it would be his lastFinal Destinationfilm since every film in the franchise takes several years to develop. Stein added:
We knew this would probably be his last Final Destination movie. We didn’t realize it would be his last movie.
The director added that they wanted Todd to say farewell to the audience. They hinted at a scene where Bludworth would give a statement to his fans, where they encouraged Todd to use his own words. Stein said fans would see Todd “speaking directly from the heart to the audience” in the movie, and it would reportedly be an emotional scene. He admitted that Todd’s “very inspirational” message also affected them because it was about life, how precious living is, and how one should enjoy every single moment of their lives. Todd passed away in November 2024 due to stomach cancer. Todd’s character in the franchise — Bludworth — has sparked various rumors due to the cryptic information he holds. For instance, he frequently talks about death and how one cannot escape it. Some fans speculate that he’s not human; others go as far as believing that he is Death itself.
Fans are likely to find answers about Bludworth’s backstory inFinal Destination Bloodlines. He is one of the most interesting characters in the franchise due to his knowledge of death. He appears in key moments explaining the nature of death to fearful teenagers who just survived a death-defying incident but are dying one by one after that fateful event. He would tell them that they couldn’t cheat death and there’s no escape from death while remaining detached and calm around it. His cold and poetic way of speaking about death suggests a deeper connection to the supernatural, and fans will soon be able to confirm it.
