attempt to avoid killing important NPCs. If you want to wait until later in the game to start the Dark Brotherhood quest,Oblivion Remasteredplayers should complete the Arena questline, then complete the Origin of the Gray Prince quest to make the Arena Champion docile, which counts as killing an innocent NPC.

Travel here, kill Rufio, then talk to Lucien Lachance again to be invited to the Cheydinhal Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary and learn the password to the Ancient Black Door: “Sanguine, my brother.”
Part One: Vicente Valtieri Contracts
Your first mentor within the Dark Brotherhood is the vampire Vicente Valtieri, who can typically be found in the back of the Sanctuary in his quarters. There are four contracts Vicente Valtieri will offer players as the first part of the Dark Brotherhood questline inOblivion Remastered: A Watery Grave, Accidents Happen, Scheduled for Execution, and The Assassinated Man.
A Watery Grave
Tocomplete the A Watery Grave contract,Oblivion Remasteredplayers must kill Gaston Tussaud, the captain of the pirate ship Marie Elena. There is no bonus for this contract.
To do this, make your way to the Waterfront District of the Imperial City and make your way south. Then, players have two options to find the captain:
Return to Vicente Valtieri, and you will receive the Black Band, a ring that grants a bonus to the Light Armor and Security Skills and raises your Resist Magic stat.
Accidents Happen
To complete the Accidents Happen contract,Oblivion Remasteredplayers must kill a Wood Elf named Baenlin, who lives in Bruma. To get the bonus for the Accidents Happen contract, you must make it look like an accident by loosening the screws on a trophy Minotaur head that’s mounted directly above his favorite sitting chair.
To do this, make your way to Bruma and find Baenlin’s house as indicated on your compass.Make sure to Sneakbefore you enter the home, then make your way upstairs as you avoid both Baenlin and Gromm, his personal guard. In the bedroom look for a secret Crawlspace door, indicated on a wall with a large rectangular hole. Open this door, then wait until 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., when Baenlin will be sitting in his chair.
Loosen the screws of the trophy inside the Crawlspace, and the Minotaur head will fall on Baenlin and make his death look like an accident. To escape, Sneak your way to the upper railing, then jump off toward the door. If you open the front door fast enough, you will not attract Gromm’s attention.
Return to Vicente Valtieri, and you will receive the standard Gold reward as well as the Sufferthorn Dagger as a bonus, which will Damage Health and Drain Strength on hit.
Scheduled for Execution
To complete the Scheduled for Execution contract,Oblivion Remasteredplayers must kill Valen Dreth, the Dark Elf who mocks your character in the Imperial Prison at the very start of the game. To get the bonus for the Scheduled for Execution contract, you must not kill any Guards on your way into and out of the prison.
To do this, use the Sewer Key to enter the Sewers at the place where you first escaped the Imperial Prison (just northwest of the Imperial City). Enter the sewers, thenquietly Sneak your way throughthe tunnels until you reach the cell that you started the game in. The Detect Life spell is invaluable here, as it will help you avoid Guards and safely complete the contract and secure its bonus.
Once you make it back, Valen Dreth will address you. If you want to get a bit of revenge, tell him “You’re going to die here,” mirroring Dreth’s own comments at the start of the game. Kill Dreth, then sneak your way back to the Sanctuary.
Return to Vicente Valtieri, and you will receive the standard Gold reward as well as the Scales of Pitiless Justice. When held in your inventory, this item will grant +2 to your Intelligence, Agility, and Strength Attributes, but drain your Personality by -2.
The Assassinated Man
To complete The Assassinated Man contract,Oblivion Remasteredplayers must poison a man named Francois Motierre with a special dagger to fake his death. There is no bonus for this contract.
To do this, head to Chorrol and look for Francois Motierre’s home in the south of the city. Talk to Francois, then wait until the underworld enforcer Hides-His-Heart enters the home to kill Motierre himself. Attack Motierre with the Langourwine Dagger to fake his death, then immediately run away from Chorrol and Hides-His-Heart toavoid garnering a Bounty.
Wait until midnight the following day, then go to the Chorrol Chapel undercroft and look for Motierre’s “corpse” in the lower level of the crypt. Bring him back to life, then fight off his zombie family members.
Return to Vicente Valtieri, and you will receive the Cruelty’s Heart necklace and the Sanctuary Well Key. Cruelty’s Heart grants a bonus to Willpower and Strength, while the Sanctuary Well Key provides a shortcut into the Sanctuary outside the Abandoned House in Cheydinhal.
Part Two: Ocheeva Contracts
After you complete The Assassinated Man, Vincente Valtieri will have no more contracts for you, and will turn you over to Ocheeva for future work in the Dark Brotherhood. Ocheeva can typically be found in her quarters just down the hall from Vicente Valtieri’s lair, practically a straight run forward from the Ancient Black Door.Oblivion Remasteredplayers can pick up four contracts from Ocheeva: The Lonely Wanderer, Bad Medicine, Whodunit?, and Permanent Retirement.
The Lonely Wanderer
Tocomplete The Lonely Wanderer contract,Oblivion Remasteredplayers must kill Faelian, a High Elf living somewhere in the Imperial City. To get a bonus for The Lonely Wanderer, you must kill Faelian in a secure, interior location away from any other NPCs.
To do this, ask about Faelian in the Elven Gardens District to find out he has been staying at the Tiber Septim Hotel in the Talos Plaza District. Travel here later at night to find him in a room with a woman named Atraena. Talk to him here, then wait until about 4:00 a.m. and talk to him again once he leaves the hotel.
He will ask you to get some Skooma to become his friend. you’re able to either purchase some from Nordinor, a vendor who spawns in the alley next to the hotel in Bravil at midnight, or find Skooma in various locations throughout Cyrodiil. Return to him and give him Skooma to be invited to his “special place”.
Travel to Lorkmir’s House, which is considered a secure location for the Lonely Wanderer quest. Kill him here, then return to the Sanctuary.
Return to Ocheeva to receive a standard Gold reward as well as Shadowhunt as a bonus. Shadowhunt is an enchanted Bow that deals extra Health and Magicka damage, turns Undead, and inflictsWeakness to Poisonon hit.
To complete the Bad Medicine contract,Oblivion Remasteredplayers must kill the Warlord of Fort Sutch, who is reliant on a special medicine. To get the Bad Medicine bonus, you must sneak into Fort Sutch and replace his medicine with abottle of Poisoned Medicinewithout being seen.
To do this, find Fort Sutch in the southwest of Cyrodiil, then Sneak and enter the compound. Almost immediately, you should see a locked door on your right – unlock this door, then sneak through the tunnels it leads to. This is the easiest route through Fort Sutch as it leads directly to Roderick’s Medicine Cabinet and almost entirely avoids wandering bandits.
Replace Roderick’s Medicine with the Poisoned Medicine, then sneak back out. On the way out, use spells like Detect Life to make sure you avoid guards. If you get caught, you will forfeit the bonus.
Return to Ocheeva, and you will receive a standard Gold reward as well as The Deceiver’s Finery as a bonus. The Deceiver’s Finery is an enchanted piece of clothing that grants a boost to your Personality and Speechcraft Skills when worn.
Whodunit?
To complete the Whodunit? contract,Oblivion Remasteredplayersmust kill all five guests in Summitmist Manor. To get the Whodunit? bonus, you must successfully kill every guest one by one without garnering any suspicion from the other remaining guests.
Once you have killed every guest without getting caught, return to the Sanctuary. Ocheeva will give you the standard Gold reward as well as the permanent Night Mother’s Blessing buff. This buff raises your Acrobatics, Blade, Marksman, Security, and Sneak skills by 2 permanently.
Permanent Retirement
To complete the Permanent Retirement contract,Oblivion Remastered players must slay Amadus Phillida, the recently retired former commander of the Imperial City Guard who had it out for the Dark Brotherhood. To get the bonus, you must remove his finger, then place it into the desk of his successor within his former office in the Imperial City.
To do this, travel to Leyawiin, and wait until Phillida is swimming without his armor on. He tends to go swimming in the late afternoon, from around 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Shoot him withthe Rose of Sithisfrom one of the nearby alleyways to instantly kill him and avoid getting a bounty. Wait a few moments for his guard to leave, then loot his body to get Phillida’s Finger.
Travel to the Imperial Legion Offices, within the Prison District of the Imperial City. Do this at night to more easily avoid the patrols. Unlock the door and sneak inside, then place Amadus’s Finger into the desk to complete the contract.
Return to Ocheeva, and you will receive the standard Gold reward, as well as 500 bonus Gold as a reward for completing the bonus requirements.
Part Three: Purification of the Cheydinhal Sanctuary
After you complete Permanent Retirement, you will becalled to see Lucien Lachanceat his lair in Fort Farragut, just to the northeast of Cheydinhal. Fight through the skeletal enemies in the bowels of the Fort until you find Lachance’s hideout. He will tell you that you must purify the Cheydinhal Sanctuary.
To complete The Purification quest,Oblivion Remastered players must kill every member of the Cheydinhal Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary for Lucien Lachance. Lachance suspects that someone has infiltrated the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary in Cheydinhal, but because you joined after he believes the traitor joined, he does not cast any suspicion on you.
You do not have to sneak back into the Sanctuary. Once inside, wait until each member is alone, then take them out one by one using whatever method you see fit. It’s best to wait until members are alone, or at least away from the rest of the Sanctuary, to avoid having to fight more than one at a time.
As Lucien Lachance suggests, you can also use Poisoned Apples to kill each member of the Cheydinhal Sanctuary. Reverse pickpocket these into each member’s pocket, and remove all other Food sources in the Sanctuary, to force them to eat it. You can also place these in front of NPCs who are sitting down. You can find a stack of 10 Poisoned Apples inside Lucien Lachance’s cave.
Return to Lachance once the terrible deed is done. You will be promoted to Lachance’s personal assassin, and he will give you his loyal mount Shadowmere, which isthe fastest horse inOblivion Remastered.
After you complete The Purification, Lucien Lachance will make you his Silencer, a kind of personal assassin for a member of the Black Hand. You will no longer receive Dark Brotherhood Contracts. Instead, your next few quests in the Dark Brotherhood questline will arrive in the form of Dead Drops.
Lachance will lead you towards the first Dead Drop location. After you complete each Dead Drop quest, a pop-up will direct you to the next Dead Drop location and your next assassination target.

To find J’Ghasta, head to Bruma and follow your compass to find his home. Enter the Secret Training Room via a hidden trapdoor, secreted away beneath a pile of clutter. Kill J’Ghasta in any way you see fit – if youdecide to go for the Sneak route, wait until midnight for him to go to sleep, which will make it easier to land a Sneak hit on him.
You will receive 500 Gold for completing the Broken Vows Dead Drop, delivered at the fourth Dead Drop location.

To find the Flooded Mine, travel to Bravil and head north. The cave features a lot of underwater segments, so be sure to purchase orcraft a Potion of Water Breathing. Reference the schedule note that comes in the Dead Drop to find out Uvani’s schedule, then travel to the Inn that he is currently staying at, according to the note:

Kill him, then travel to the seventh Dead Drop location to get your 500 Gold reward and your next instructions.
A Kiss Before Dying
To find the final Dead Drop location and start the A Kiss Before Dying quest,Oblivion Remastered players must go into Nornal, an Ayleid Ruin southwest of Cheydinhal, and look for the Dead Drop inside a pool behind a locked door at the start of the dungeon. To complete this Dead Drop, you must travel to Bravil and kill Ungolim, a Wood Elf, whoprays to the Bravil Lucky Old Ladystatue every evening.
To do this, climb up onto the upper rafters of the houses that surround the Lucky Old Lady and Sneak to find a spot where no one can see you, but you can still see the front of the statue. Wait until about 6:00 p.m., then kill Ungolim with a Sneak attack.
Part Five: Rooting Out The Traitor
After you complete the final Dead Drop quest, Lucien Lachance will suddenly appear as you feel a “shadowy presence” approach. Lachance will scold you and threaten to kill you – as it turns out, the last several Dead Drops were swapped with new instructions, which led you to kill other members of the Black Hand, including the Speaker himself.
Lucien Lachance doesn’t necessarily blame you, but the living members of the Black Hand are pointing the finger of blame at him. He asks you to go to your next Dead Drop location early and wait until someone arrives. Lachance will go to Applewatch, where you completed the Next of Kin Dead Drop, until you discover who is behind this treachery.
Following A Lead
To complete the Following a Lead quest,Oblivion Remasteredplayers must travel to Anvil, then wait while within range of the fountain. A Wood Elf should spawn next to the Dead Drop barrel behind the fountain. Confront this Wood Elf to learn that the person who paid him to replace Dead Dropslives beneath the Anvil Lighthouse.
You can kill the Wood Elf, or wait until he drops the Dead Drop in the barrel, to pick up your 500 Gold reward for the previous Dead Drop.
Travel to the Lighthouse and go to the top, then talk to Ulfgar Fog-Eye. Tell him you are a member of the Dark Brotherhood to get the key to the cellar.
Leave the Lighthouse and walk around its exterior to find the cellar. Explore the cellar and you should find the Traitor’s Diary in front of a disembodied head labeled “Mother’s Head”. Read the Diary to learn that the traitor has a vendetta against Lucien Lachance and the Dark Brotherhood.
Return to Applewatch, and you will find that Lucien Lachance has been slain by the Black Hand for his supposed treason, not knowing what you now know. You will be promoted to Speaker of the Black hand, replacing Lachance, and will begiven the Black Hand Robe and Black Hand Hoodas a reward for your continued loyalty to the Dark Brotherhood.
Then, you will be invited to take part in a ritual to speak with the Night Mother herself so the Dark Brotherhood can figure out what to do in the wake of this betrayal.
Honor Thy Mother
To complete the Honor Thy Mother quest,Oblivion Remastered players must follow Arquen and the other members of the Black Hand to Bravil, then wait until nighttime. The Black Hand will perform a ritual to open up a secret passageway beneath the Lucky Old Lady fountain which leads to the Crypt of the Night Mother.
Follow the group down below and wait until Arquen summons the ghostly visage of the Night Mother for guidance. After a brief moment of dialogue, the Night Mother will tell Arquen that Lucien Lachance was innocent, and that the traitor is amongst them right now. Suddenly, Mathieu Bellamont will reveal himself as the traitor, andenact his revenge on the Dark Brotherhoodfor the suffering they have caused him.
Kill Bellamont, then talk to Arquen and the Night Mother. You will become the Listener of the Black Hand, and the Night Mother will bless your Blade of Woe with a suite of powerful enchantments. Before you leave, loot all of the Coffin containers in the room, which contain a swathe of extremely valuable items and powerful pieces of equipment. You will not be able to return to the Crypt of the Night Mother once you leave.
Part Six: The Listener of the Black Hand
The Whispers of Death quest is the final quest in the Dark Brotherhood questline inOblivion Remastered. After you complete Honor Thy Mother, you will become the new Listener of the Black Hand and will be given control of the Cheydinhal Sanctuary. As Listener, you now have a recurring weekly quest to go to the Lady of Luck in Bravil, where you will receive a list ofpeople who have completed the Black Sacramentand request the Dark Brotherhood’s services.
Bring this list back to Arquen each week to fulfill your responsibilities as Listener and get a lump sum of Gold from the Dark Brotherhood coffers.
You will also find that new Dark Brotherhood Murderer NPCs have filled up the halls of the Cheydinhal Sanctuary. As Listener, you may recruit one Dark Brotherhood Murderer as a follower. Talk to one of these new NPCs to recruit them to your side.
After you become Listener and pick up this recurring quest, you will have completed the mainOblivion RemasteredDark Brotherhood questline and are free to continue to perform your duties as Listener whenever you like – or ignore them entirely. This quest is optional, but the rewards are worth the small amount of time it takes to complete each week.
