Summary
Even though the long-running and highly popularGame of Thronesseries ended six years ago, the HBO show was plunged back into the headlines recently due to Colossal Biosciences revealing that the extinct dire wolves were being introduced to the world again, and thatGeorge R.R. Martin fans were beyond baffledat the author being an advisor and investor in the company. Now, Sophie Turner, who played Sansa Stark, opens up about what she thinks of it all and whether it’s a positive step forward or a step backwards for the animal that disappeared around 12,000 years ago from the world.
The eldest daughter of Lord Eddard Stark and Lady Catelyn, Sansa didn’t have the best of times throughoutGame of Thrones' eight turbulent seasons. Not only was she horribly abused by the sadistic Joffrey Baratheon, where he even forced her to look at her father’s head on a pike after he beheaded him, and then accused of murdering him, but she also endured further hardship at the hands of Ramsey Bolton, set up by Littlefinger’s need for power and control, particularly in the Northern region. Now,Sophie Turner’s real world couldn’t be further from that of Martin’s fantasy lands, but the actress has had the time lately to post an emotional response to the surprising news of the Dire Wolves' reintroduction.
Sophie Turner Calls Dire Wolf De-Extinction “A Monumental Moment” for Science
In a post on her personal Instagram account, Sophie Turner has responded to the news regarding the three Dire Wolf puppies Colossal Biosciences has recently introduced to the world, all thanks to the company’s first-ever “de-extinction” program. In Turner’s emotional and positive post, she called it “a monumental moment, not just for the return of the iconic dire wolf, but for science, for conservation, and for everyone who’s ever dreamed of the impossible.”
Even though many share the same optimism as Turner regarding the Dire Wolves making a comeback due to the positive conservation elements it could provide, others aren’t too sure.On Reddit, some concerned people have called the company out over how they haven’t actually cloned a “real” dire wolf due to skepticism over their DNA terminology and how it’s more of a “gray wolf with dire wolf-like traits”. Others have called out that the company should have put its resources into struggling ecosystems and endangered species that are barely surviving. However,George R.R. Martinhas publicly commented on the “de-extinction” program, stating that meeting a real-life dire wolf made him so emotional that he cried.
InGame of Thrones,Sansa’s very own dire wolf was called Ladyand followed her when she moved to King’s Landing. However, Lady was killed by Sansa’s father after Cersei demanded she be killed in place of Arya’s Dire Wolf named Nymeria, who was forced to leave in a bid to save her from certain death after biting Joffrey for defending Arya. After the filming of the sad episode was finalized, Sophie Turner became so attached to Lady that she ended up adopting her, calling her Zunni, so it’s obvious that Turner has a huge soft spot for wolf-looking canines, even though Lady was a Northern Inuit dog breed.
