Hype around theGears of Warfranchise has reached a fever pitch over the last year. After not receiving a new game since 2020,Gears of Waris rearing its way back to the forefront with the recently announcedGears of War: Reloaded, the second re-release of the 2006 original game. This new title should serve as something of a holdover while series developer The Coalition prepares the next proper title,Gears of War: E-Day.

Thisupdated version ofGears of Warwill offer 4K resolution and 60 FPS gameplay (120 FPS in multiplayer), and it also includes all the previously available DLC from the title’s previous 2015 remaster,Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. It is also set to be the firstGears of Wartitle to release on Xbox’s competitor, the PlayStation 5, further exemplifying the change in strategy that Microsoft has put in motion since early last year. This should only be the beginning for theGears of Warfranchise, andGears of War: E-Dayshould follow in its footsteps.

Gears of War: E-Day Should Pay Attention to Reloaded’s Release

Gears of War: E-Day Should Come to PlayStation Eventually

WithGears of War: Reloadedmaking its way to PlayStation 5, Microsoft can continue following this strategy by releasingGears of War: E-Dayon the platform. The publisher has clearly expressed a greater interest in releasing games across multiple platforms, a strategy that began last year with titles likeHi-Fi Rush,Sea of Thieves,Pentiment, andGroundedmaking the leap to competing platforms. That approach has also extended to other titles from within the Xbox first-party ecosystem, withIndiana Jones and the Great Circlereceiving a PlayStation 5 release, and upcoming games likeDoom: The Dark AgesandThe Outer Worlds 2receiving day-and-date releases on Sony’s platform.

Furthermore, whilean Xbox pillar likeGears of Wararriving on PlayStation once seemed impossible, Microsoft previously showed a willingness to bring its trademark franchises elsewhere by releasingForza Horizon 5on the PlayStation 5. Rumors have even swirled that the Xbox’s flagship franchise,Halo, will also arrive on other platforms, notably the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Xbox has clearly moved away from the model of releasing exclusive games (even dating back to when the publisher began simultaneously releasing titles on PC and Xbox), andGears of War: E-Dayshould have no problem following suit with a PlayStation release.

Gears of War: E-Day’s Prequel Status Should Bring In Newcomers

Gears of War: E-Dayalso has an ace in the holeif it were to receive a PlayStation release, as this new game is a prequel set 14 years before the originalGears of Wargame. Thus, fans will not have to play through the entire series to understand its story. Between the franchise’s original entry and its prequel title receiving releases on PlayStation, newcomers would have an easy way into the franchise without needing to do too much homework.

If these twoGears of Warreleases on PlayStation prove successful, they could also lead to eventual re-releases of the subsequent entries in the series. Previously, whenGears of War: Ultimate Editionwas releasedon the Xbox One in 2015, it initially came with a download code for the other then-available entries in the series. While some may prefer to see full remakes of the second and thirdGears of Wargames, getting the titles onto PlayStation in some form opens the door for new players to experience this long-running Xbox franchise.

WithGears of War: Reloadedmaking its way to PlayStation 5, Microsoft can continue following this strategy by releasingGears of War: E-Dayon the platform.

Gears of War’s PlayStation Release Could Be A Sign For The Future Of The Franchise

The success ofGears of War: ReloadedandGears of War: E-Dayon PlayStation 5 could also signal that the inevitable sixth main entry in the series will arrive on the system. Microsoft has seemingly taken more of a platform-agnostic approach, emphasizing the innumerable number of devices on the market capable of playing Xbox games. If the publisher is truly serious about putting the kibosh on exclusive games, bringing one of its most iconic franchises to PlayStation would be a great way to bring PlayStation players into the Xbox ecosystem.

Gears of War: ReloadedseesXbox breaking down a barrierfor the series with its arrival on PlayStation. While its current approach to largely abandoning console-exclusive games has proven controversial, Microsoft has clearly doubled down on it and looks likely to continue doing so. Thus, if the publisher really wants its games on as many devices as possible, perhaps it should consider building onGears of War: Reloaded’s approach withGears of War: E-Dayin the future.
