Gex Trilogy

As one of the premiere publishers of physical video games, Limited Run Games is not afraid to lean into Internet culture in unconventional ways. Its recentDOOMcollection wasshipped in a box which could itself run the originalDOOM, a nod to the common joke that the game can be played on any piece of hardware. During the YouTube era,Gexbecame something of a cult classic in large part due to its inexplicable sense of humor. This online infamy will surely be a source of interest for younger fans who never had the chance to experience the original releases.

Another trend which works in Limited Run’s favor is the recent wave of 90s-era mascots returning to the spotlight after a long period of hibernation. Gex belongs to a set of 3D platformer protagonists who attempted to emulate the success of Mario and Crash Bandicoot. Although he never quite achieved that same icon status, his B-tier brethrenBubsy and Glover have received a lot more attention than usual lately, indicating that 90s nostalgia might be a dominant force in the games industry in years to come.
