Though it hasn’t been officially announced yet, it seems safe to assume that there will be aHogwarts Legacy 2at some point. The first game proved to be a tremendous success, outselling every other game in the year of its release, even amidst understandable backlash related toJ.K. Rowling’s ongoing transphobic attacks; it simply wouldn’t make sense for Warner Bros. to ignore the IP moving forward.
Hogwarts LegacyprecededSuicide Squad: Kill the JusticeLeague, which is perhapsWarner Bros.’s biggest gaming failure. As such, a continuation of the grossly successfulHarry Potteradaptation seems advisable from a business standpoint.
Despite its immense popularity,Hogwarts Legacycan hardly be called perfect. It falls short in a number of key areas, including world design, narrative, and RPG systems, often coming across as a fairly shallow and hollow gaming experience. One less-discussed problem is the game’s enemy variety: although it takes place in the rich and fantastical world ofHarry Potter,Hogwarts Legacyalmost always has the player fighting goblins, trolls, spiders, or humans, which can get old quite fast. Assuming that Avalanche Software is looking to improve combat and gameplay variety, this could be a good pain point to target forHogwarts Legacy 2.
Enemies That Should Appear in Hogwarts Legacy 2
Dementors
Perhaps the most likely creature to appear inHogwarts Legacy 2, dementors are ghostly beings shrouded in ratty black cloaks, ready to feed on the souls of their victims, depleting their emotional energy and potentially even killing them. They are typically enlisted as the guards of Azkaban, the Wizarding World’s high-security prison, so their appearance inHogwarts Legacy 2would need to be predicated upon some kind of major plot development, perhaps one that involves theplayer-character heading to Azkaban themselves. Their inclusion would also likely be joined by a Patronus Charm mechanic, which would be quite interesting indeed.
Basilisk
The most notable appearance of a basilisk inHarry Potterlore comes inThe Chamber of Secrets, where it’s revealed that a Basilisk was bred by Salazar Slytherin to keep watch over the titular subterranean chamber. Since basilisks are mentioned so scarcely in the source material,Hogwarts Legacy 2is in a unique positionto flesh them out a bit more via the interactive medium. The Basilisk’s powers, namely its deadly stare, could also make for a mechanically interesting combat encounter. The creature would probably need to be restricted to a boss fight due to its lore significance and size, though.
Werewolves
Compared to the aforementioned creatures, werewolves are certainly less unique: lycans of all kinds have appeared in countless video games already. That said, they could still be menacing and offer a fun, intense twist on some ofHogwarts Legacy’s other humanoid enemy types. Like the basilisk, a werewolf encounter could be especially effective as a boss fight, as an NPC that the player has developed some sort of relationship with could be revealed as having this horrific curse, transforming under the pale light of a full moon.
Vampires
One of the more surprising and oftenforgotten elements of theHarry Potteruniverse, vampires are depicted much in the same way as in other folktales and legends. They are bloodsucking creatures with an aversion to light and garlic, though they do not appear to be immortal in Rowling’s imagining, as they are known to die of old age after roughly two centuries. They are socially maligned, but not outright criminalized or shunned: Horace Slughorn even invites a vampire to his famous annual Christmas party inHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Since these creatures exist mostly in the background in otherHarry Pottermedia,Hogwarts Legacy 2should seize the opportunity to flesh them out a bit more, including them as a fun spin on human-type enemies while shedding more light on their lore.
