The developer ofHorizon, Guerrilla Games, has released three other installments so far, including a second mainline title, aHorizonVR spin-off, and aLEGO Horizongame. TheHorizongames have sold a total of 32 million copies worldwide, according to statistics provided by Sony.
SinceHorizonhas been so lucrative for PlayStation, it may be unsurprising to learn that the company has bigger plans for the series. PlayStation is not only working ona live-actionHorizonmovie, it’s also making aMonster Hunter-like, multiplayerHorizongame and a third mainline entry in the series. Guerrilla Gamesand PlayStation haven’t shared much information about any of these specific projects, but rumors suggest that they’re still years away from being released. In spite of this, the upcomingHorizongames will likely be available on PlayStation 5, according to one insider.
Horizon 3 Will Reportedly Be a Cross-Generation Game
TheX user TCMFGamesshared a few days ago thatHorizon 3will potentially be launched in 2027, sometime after the release of theHorizonmultiplayer game.Horizon 3’s story, meanwhile, is seemingly going to be set around Nemesis, the hostile AI that serves as the overarching antagonist of the franchise. Like its 2022 predecessor,Horizon Forbidden West, the game will also allegedly be available as a cross-gen title, on both PS5 and the as-of-yet unannounced PS6. Although TCMFGames doesn’t have an extensive track record in the gaming leaks and rumors space, this information seems pretty believable.
Horizon 3 Will Probably Be Great, But Some Fans May Be Upset About It Being Launched on Last-Gen Platforms
Given how consistently good Guerrilla Games' titles have been,Horizon 3will probably be on par withHorizon Zero DawnandHorizon Forbidden Westin terms of quality. However, the fact that the game is allegedly a cross-gen release may disappoint some players. Since the start of the PS5 generation, a lot of gamers have complained about the relative lack of next-gen exclusives. Most companies, including PlayStation, supported last-gen consoles heavily in the early 2020s, and some are still doing so to this day.
Although plenty of PS4 and Xbox One owners are happy that they can play new AAA releases without having to shell out hundreds of dollars for a next-generation console, other gamers are not as enthused. Many PS5 players believe that the support oflast-gen platformsis holding video games back, from a technical standpoint, and it is thus bad for the industry as a whole. The PS5 is already a five-year-old console, and yet, in some people’s eyes, it feels like the generation is just getting started, since companies have only recently stopped supporting the PS4 and Xbox One.
Since the PS6 Will Probably Be Expensive, a Cross-Gen Release Will At Least Make Horizon 3 More Accessible
IfHorizon 3is indeed a cross-gen title, it won’t be able to take full advantage of the PS6’s hardware. As unfortunate as that may be, there is a bright side to the situation. Unlike earlier console generations, the graphical leap between PS5 and PS6 games probably won’t be that significant. It’s hard to imagine, then, that PS6 video games will be so graphically intensive that they won’t be able to run on a base PS5. Plus, considering the economic issues that the world is currently facing, it’s likely thatthe PS6 will be very expensive, perhaps even more so than a $700 PS5 Pro. As such, launching the nextHorizongame on both PS5 and PS6 would give it a lot more reach than it would otherwise get if it were exclusive to a next-gen console.
