Some players have noticed that the Runes page is completely locked at the start ofDOOM: The Dark Ages, and since the game places ahuge focus on collectibles and secrets, many players are wondering if they’ve missed a crucial upgrade somewhere in the opening chapters. There’s no reason to worry, though, since Shield Runes are an unmissable upgrade inDOOM: The Dark Ages. The empty Runes page will be filled with multiple new abilities just a few hours into the main campaign.
How to Get Runes in DOOM: The Dark Ages
Shield Runes are unlocked inchapter nineofthe main story inDOOM: The Dark Ages. At the start of the level, the first Shield Rune upgrade will be unlocked automatically. There are multiple Runes to find throughoutThe Dark Ages, butGround Fissureis the first one that players will get during the campaign.
These Shield Runes modify the shield’s parry, delivering devastating attacks whenever the player parries a green projectile. Ground Fissure, for example, summons a fissure in front of the player that damages all demons in its path. Each Rune hasupgrades that can be purchased with gold, too, so there are plenty of opportunities for players to tweak them in order to fit their playstyle.

Parrying is a huge part ofDOOM: The Dark Ages— especially onhigher difficulty levels— so investing gold into Shield Rune upgrades is a great way to improve survivability and even the odds against the demonic hordes.
