Summary

Jujutsu Kaisenis a very beloved series, and one of its most standout events was definitelythe battle between Sukuna and Gojo, which is still talked about almost 2 years later. Gege has just revealed new information about this battle, specifically about how he chose to conclude it.

The Fight Remains To Be The Most Iconic Battle in the Jujutsu Kaisen Series

The most iconic battle in all of Jujutsu Kaisen is unarguably the confrontation between Satoru Gojo, the strongest sorcerer in the modern era, and Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses.

This battle of the best has gone down in manga history as one of the most anticipated clashes of all time, and it has yet to even be animated. Gojo vs Sukuna unfolded in Jujutsu Kaisen’s final arc, and it saw these two fighters go head-to-head with each other, being incredibly close throughout.

Generally, Gojo had the upper hand thanks to his Limitless ability, while the best Sukuna could do was to use Mahoraga to counter it.Mahoraga was eventually taken down, and Sukuna was left with no way to counter Gojo’s ultimate ability, or so he thought.

Immediately after Gojo took down Mahoraga, he lost the battle due to one reason - lowering his guard. Indeed, this was revealed by Gege Akutami recently in the JJK exhibition, along with much else about the fight between the two.

With Sukuna defeating Gojo, a raid had to be waged against him by all the remaining sorcerers to even the odds, and they would have all gotten wiped out if it wasn’t for Yuji’s ties to Sukuna as his former vessel.

Gege Reveals The Anime Inspired The End of Gojo Vs Sukuna

Gege Was Inspired By A Discussion With The Director Shota Goshozono

TheJujutsu Kaisenanime isbased on Gege Akutami’s work in the manga. So far, the anime adaptation has two seasons out, with one more on the way for now. It’s typically the manga that inspires the anime, but sometimes, it can be the other way around where the product inspires the original source.

Recently, the Jujutsu Kaisen series held an event, specifically, an exhibition in Tokyo. This event covered details up to Volume 27 of the manga and Gege revealed a great deal of information here. As stated previously, it covered some key details from Gojo vs Sukuna, adding context to some major events. Some reveals were good, while others weren’t all that well received by the fans. Regardless, it was a great way to know more about Gege’s thought process while he was working on this great battle.

Farewell, Gojo Satoru! I shall never forget you for as long as I live! — Sukuna

Gege had a question about the chapter that concludedthe fight between Gojo and Sukuna, Chapter 236 of the manga. He was asked about why he chose to depict Gojo’s death and flashback the way he did. When Gojo died, Gege showcased him with his old friends, such as Geto, being happy.

Gege revealed he was inspired by the anime for this scene, specifically, by a conversation he had with the director ofJujutsu Kaisen’ssecond anime season, Shota Goshozono. Gege was definitely worried about not being able to convey his ideas properly to readers. But most fans definitely enjoyed this ending to the battle, as it wrapped Gojo’s story up. Still, some felt it was not appropriate for Gojo to die there, as his character felt incomplete especially when he had the upper hand just a chapter before his downfall.

Here’s what Gege was asked, and his answer, based on a transcript by Twitter user @lightningclare:

“Q: Why did Gege choose to depict chapter 236 this way?

A: Gege was inspired by the discussions between him & Director Goshozono (director of Jujutsu Kaisen anime season 2). It’s a case of where the current anime influences the original work.

As for the way it turned out, Gege really thought about it for a very long time. He constantly worried over whether it’d be interesting or not, and that such a straightforward depiction of the battle from start to finish wouldn’t properly convey what he wants to readers.”
