One Piece Animator Comments on Toei’s Future AI Usage
Vincent and Many Others Are Not Happy
Toei Animation is the studio responsible for the production of theOne Pieceseries, one of the biggest anime in the world. Toei also worked on countless other anime and has animated other iconic series such asSailor MoonandDragon Ball. This company has been delivering since 1948, so it’s quite old, with seasoned individuals.
But now, Toei has angered many fans with a new comment. Toei Animation recently stated that they will start using AI in their anime productions, which is quite controversial for many reasons. AI puts animators out of work, copies artwork from human artists, and is quite damaging to the environment.
Toei claims it will use AI for storyboarding, Genga correction, and in-between frames correction, among others.
With all this drama unfolding,a very well-known French animator for Toeiwho works onOne Piece, Vincent Chansard, commented about this on his Twitter account and said the following:
“Have been talking to everyone I know on this AI thing but it seems everyone’s as confused as me. RN it just feels like an overblown disconnected PR-esque statement like “look how we are an innovative company” aimed at shareholders with no concrete real-life production change.” — Chansard Vincent
Based on what he said, he doesn’t believe Toei will really use AI and it’s all a PR stunt.
Will Toei Use AI for the One Piece Anime?

While Vincent said it could be a PR stunt, this is just his view on the matter, and what Toei does could be totally different.Toei announcing that it will use AI, and then not using it would definitely be an odd move. After all, AI could lower the costs and time needed for their productions, even though it would deliver a worse product.
There is also no reason for Toei to exclude onlyOne Piecefrom its AI usage. If it implements AI, One Piece’s anime will definitely be affected.
The implementations might take some time, but eventually, it’s more than likely that Toei will start using AI.
