Audiences are going to head into theAvengersfilms with high expectations due to the stars involved, and Marvel has a track record of delivering on that. There are manybig stars confirmed forAvengers: Doomsday, and that is likely to continue on inAvengers: Secret Wars. One of the biggest is Chris Hemsworth, who will be reprising his role as Thor once again, and Marvel has major plans for him. According to Lizzie Hall, during aCosmic Circus Q&A, Marvel wants to give Thor a “proper send-off” within these movies in an “epic way.” He is set to reunite with Loki at some stage in the films, and sources have pointed toward New Avengers (Vol. 3) #32 as the inspiration behind the send-off Thor is going to get.
Some fans might take the idea of a send-off to mean that Thor is going to die, but that’s not necessarily the case either. Instead, it could just be the end of Hemsworth’s run with Marvel for a while, as there is a possibility for the character to return as part of the Thor Corps or other aspects of Thor’s mythology. After all,Avengers: Doomsdayis proof that anyone can return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, asRobert Downey Jr will be returningto the role of Doctor Doom.
Thor is a character that has been around the MCU for a long time now, with the original film released back in 2011. Hemsworth has gone on to appear in 11 Marvel films altogether, four of which have been in his own franchise, with Marvel getting a lot of mileage out of the character. He’s gone from being obnoxious and serious to becoming comedic, sympathetic, and romantic at times. The fact that Marvel has done so much with him is a testament to Hemsworth’s range and to howpopular Thor is as a character.
Heading intoAvengers: Doomsday, he will be one of the only original Avengers left, which is something that could be played into throughout the movie. A new look Avengers lineup is expected to be put together for the upcoming films, and it will be interesting to see how Thor fits into that. However, wrapping up his storyline in movies of this stature certainly feels like a fitting moment in a similar way to how Iron Man and Captain America were written off inAvengers: Endgame.Now, the only question that remains is how Marvel will choose to achieve this with Thor inAvengers: Secret Wars, which could be a massively emotional situation.
