Besides forcing fans to rethink their theories aboutMinecraftlore, the introduction of the rideable Happy Ghast might also pave the way for more unusual and unexpected mobs to be updated as new mounts for players. As Mojang continues to revisit some ofMinecraft’s most basic features, such as adding biome variants to its Cow, Chicken, and Pig mobs, it seems Ghasts are the latest classic mob to receive an overhaul. After serving as an ever-present danger in the Nether since their introduction toMinecraftin 2010, its newest content drop transforms the unlikely Ghast into one of the Overworld’s friendliest and most useful mounted mobs.
But Mojang’s decision to single out Ghasts as a new player mount could be a sign of like-minded updates yet to come, especially forMinecraft’s more unusual and even traditionally hostile mobs. Given how far Mojang has expanded theHappy Ghast’s abilities, such as accommodating up to four players and carrying leashed boats or mobs, it opens up new opportunities for other potential mounted mobs with equally unique features. From the simpler possibilities of mounted water-based mobs to riding previously hostile mobs, Mojang has only scratched the surface after its recent Happy Ghast.
While Mojang could have easily reworked any other existing mobs as a new mount forMinecraft, such as Cows, Sheep, or even Sniffers, choosing the typically hostile Ghasts required multiple steps to “tame” them, from finding or crafting Dried Ghasts to submerging them in water. However, givenhow usefulMinecraft’s Happy Ghastcan be for players building, transporting, or traveling through the air, Mojang should consider going to similar lengths with other mobs to introduce more unexpected features, such as those listed below.
Minecraft Could Introduce New Aquatic Mounts
Water is arguably one ofMinecraft’s most underserved areas regarding rideable mobs, as beyond boats and the Dolphin’s Grace effect, players may struggle to explore underwater without the likes of water-breathing potions or respiration enchantments. Following the Happy Ghast’s example, however, Mojang could address this imbalance with new water-based mob mounts, allowing players to use the mobs' existing abilities or by taking inspiration from otherMinecraftmounts. For instance, adding aDolphin mount toMinecraftcould capitalize on its grace effect and travel faster than standard boats.
Meanwhile, a Turtle mount could allow players to both dive underwater and grant a longer duration of air in line withMinecraft’s existing turtle shell helmets. Alternatively, like Mules, Llamas, or Boats with Chests, multiple tamed Turtles could be leashed together and equipped with chests for additional storage when traveling across water. However, Guardians could be the most creative, potentially generating a similar effect to conduits around the player and their friends, and even defending players from Drowned, just as tamed Wolves would on land.
Minecraft Could Add New Mob Mounts For Combat
Another areaMinecraftcould rework is combatin terms of rideable mounts, both for PvE and PvP, especially when mobs such as Ravagers feature saddles as part of their design but can only be ridden by Illagers. But just like the hostile Ghast, Mojang could introduce a new method for either taming or raising a friendly Ravager, which players can ride and attack using its charge ability. Similarly, Hoglins and Zoglins could also be tamed as part of a focus on combat, and could even require a bit of strategy to ensure Hoglin mounts remain in the Nether and Zoglin mounts in the Overworld or End.
Minecraft Could Experiment With Other Ghast-Like Mob Mounts
Like the Happy Ghast, Mojang could instead look further afield for mobs that are least likely to be updated with mounts, particularly those that could offer more unique in-game abilities and mechanics. For example, just like Skeletons, players could ride Spiders and capitalize on their ability to climb walls, an ability that could revolutionizeMinecraft’s core gameplay around mining and exploring underground. Beyond that, Mojang could even redeemMinecraft’s controversial Phantomsby allowing players to tame and ride them as an earlier alternative to flying without Elytra or Happy Ghasts.
