Summary
In the world ofMy Hero Academia, the sudden appearance of quirks led directly to the rise ofsuper villains and Pro Heroes who use their newfound supernatural abilities to either commit crimes or fight crime respectively. But it should not be surprising to learn that not everybody went through that precise black-and-white path: there are many powerful characters in this series who are able to wield incredible quirks, and yet they areneither a hero nor a villain.
Whether they are a former hero/villain who had to retire, an illegal vigilante, a regular civilian or maybe even a young student who still hasn’t had to decide what they’re going to do with their life, the following eightMy Hero Academiacharacters are the most fascinating examples of this unusual occurrence.
8Tamashiro
A Young Primary School Student With A Lot Of Potential
In the Remedial Course Arc, audiences were introduced to the students of Masegaki Primary School, who immediately proved that the Quirk Singularity Theory is real and that quirks were actually getting dangerously stronger with each generation. While the entire class was brimming with powerful and energetic kids wielding incredible abilities, a boy namedTamashirowas definitely the biggest standout.
With his Binging Ball quirk,he is able to create and manipulate a bunch of floating spheres with teeth that can eat through almost any substance in an instant. This incredible superpower, combined with his confident but arrogant personality, made Tamashiro into a force to be reckoned with that looked and acted very similarly to Katsuki Bakugo. Unfortunately, it was never confirmed if he ever decided to use his powers for good and become an official Pro Hero.
7Eri
An Innocent Girl Who Was Exploited Due To Her Amazing Quirk
The young girl namedEriis, without a doubt, one of the most tragic characters in the entire series: she was captured, tortured and exploited by Kai Chisaki of the Shie Hassaikaidue to her Rewind quirk, which allows her to reverse a living being’s body back to a previous state with a single touch, meaning that it could be used to create Quirk-Destroying bullets.
Fortunately, Deku and Mirio saved Eri, and she began living a normal life at U.A. High School, but her incredible power was still made evident by her constant training. She was eventually able to give Mirio his quirk back and regenerate Deku’s arms during the Final War. Despite her miraculous quirk, Eri was shown as a regular high school student during the series’ epilogue, and it was never made clear if she became a hero or not.
6Ichimoku Samazu And Jube Namimaru
The Cyclops And Wolverine Of The My Hero Academia World
Ichimoku SamazuandJube Namimaruare the names of two middle school students who frequent the Naruhata ward because they’re huge fans of its resident vigilante/idol, Pop☆Step. Needless to say, due to their designs, personalities and powers, they are obviously supposed to be references to Cyclops and Wolverine from theX-Menfranchise.
Ichimoku can shoot potent laser beams from his eyes, while Jube can summon two wooden swords from his wrists, two strong quirks that they could have easily put to good use in order to become Pro Heroes or maybe even vigilantes. But they don’t really care about that, and they would much rather keep following Pop☆Step around.
5Giulio Gandini
A Strong Cyborg Butler On A Dangerous Mission
The fourthMy Hero Academiamovie introduced audiences around the world to a fascinating character namedGiulio Gandini, one of the main characters and the loyal butler of the Scervino family. He was perfect for this job, because he was able to use his Neutralization quirk to mitigate Anna’s constant pain that was caused by her own quirk, Overmodification.
Unfortunately, the Gollini Family learned about Anna’s powerful quirk, so they attacked her house and kidnapped her, leaving Giulio incredibly injured and forcing him to replace his missing body parts with cybernetic prosthetics. But the lack of a quirk didn’t stop him from becoming a beast in his battle who utilized his new weapons, his state-of-the-art motorcycle and his experience as a former military soldier to track down the Gollini Family and save Anna once and for all. Despite not really being a hero, he was able to fight the criminals on the same level as Izuku Midoriya, one of the most powerful characters in the entire series.
4Chizome Akaguro (Stain)
A Bloodthirsty Vigilante Who Hated All Heroes (Except For All Might)
Over the course of many years,Chizome Akagurogrew to resent every Pro Hero that wasn’t All Might, deeming the rest of them as corrupt people who only wanted fame and power. This mentality prompted him to become a deadly vigilante calledStendhal, who began hunting villains to try and make up for the mistakes of the heroes he hated.
With his incredible sword-fighting skills and his Bloodcurdle quirk – which allowed him to paralyze anybody whose blood he ingested – Chizome became one of the most infamous vigilantes in Japan, until he was defeated by another vigilante called Knuckleduster and he began questioning his own philosophy. This event inspired Chizome to become a dangerous villain calledStain, who began hunting down corrupt heroes and even targeted some of the good ones just because they weren’t All Might. Nevertheless, his career as a villain didn’t last very long, and he eventually decided to fight on the side of the heroes during the Final War, until All For One stole his quirk and killed him.
3Iwao Oguro (Knuckleduster)
A Former Pro Hero Who Became A Violent Vigilante After Losing His Quirk
Iwao Oguroused to be a powerful Pro Hero who went by the name of O’Clock. With his incredible Overclock quirk, he was able to accelerate at such extreme speeds that sometimes he felt like time was slowing down around him. Sadly, one day, All For One stole his quirkand he was forced to become a quirkless vigilante calledKnuckleduster.
Despite his unfortunate situation, he was still a strong and resilient fighter who utilized his immense physique and prior experience working as a hero in order to track down and defeat the Instant Villains that were terrorizing Naruhata. On top of that, he was also shown to bequite efficient at using special equipment (like brass knuckles and a grappling hook) and he evenbecame the mentor of Koichi Haimawari, who would go on to become a famous vigilante/Pro Hero of his own. But all of this had a big cost, as Iwao was forced to consume painkillers on a daily basis in order to relieve the pain of fighting without a quirk.
2Danjuro Tobita (Gentle Criminal)
A Former Independent Villain Who Just Wanted To Become Famous
After his dreams of becoming a hero died abruptly,Danjuro Tobitastill had one goal in mind: to become a celebrity, no matter what. With the help of his loyal sidekick/lover, La Brava, he took the mantle ofGentle Criminal,an elegant independent villain who uploaded all of his misdemeanors to the internet in order to gain fame. But his encounter with Izuku Midoriya during the U.A. School Festival Arc made Gentle realize how wrong he was and that he actually cared for La Brava more than he cared about becoming famous.
In order to redeem himself,he left his days of villainy behind him and used his incredible Elasticity quirk(which was boosted by La Brava’s Love) to save U.A. High School from falling into the ground during the Final War Arc. Despite showcasing the potential to become an efficient Pro Hero, the epilogue revealed that Danjuro married his partner and they both eventually founded a company called GeL Inc.
1Hikage Shinomori
The Most Powerful One For All User That Didn’t Become A Pro Hero
Due to its stockpiling and transferable nature, anybody who had the privilege to wield One For All in their body had the potential to become a powerful hero. Some of them, like Daigoro Banjo, Nana Shimura or Toshinori Yagi, did exactly that, but there’s also one notorious exception, and his name wasHikage Shinomori.
The previous two One For All users, Kudo and Bruce, were part of a resistance that was fighting in a war against All For One, while Hikage was just a regular civilian who decided to use his time with this quirk training his body in order to keep stockpiling huge amounts of power for his eventual successors to use. On top of that, his original quirk, Danger Sense, allowed him to immediately sense any incoming threats around him. Hikage definitely had the potential to become a notorious Pro Hero, but his selfless sacrifice allowed subsequent One For All users, like All Might and Deku, to become legendary heroes of their own.
