After the Final War came to an end inMy Hero Academia, Kohei Horikoshi spent a few chapters on the aftermath of the war, and showing what happened to the main characters.
WhenMy Hero Academia Volume 42was released, it included an additional 38-page chapter set a few years after the war. However, many fans did not like the ending, especially the epilogue — but why is the ending of this series so controversial?
The Aftermath of The Final War
While the Final War is one of the most amazing parts of the story, everyone wanted to know what would happen to the main characters after the war. As for Class 1-A, the students continue their studies after the war (except for Yuga Aoyama, who steps down), and they move on as “normally” as possible; after all, everyone is dealing with everything they experienced in the war and mourning the deaths it caused.
Right after the war, Midoriya is once again Quirkless, having only the remaining embers of One For All with him. Now, like everyone else, he has to adapt to an ever-changing world after the final battle.
What Happened To Deku, Bakugo and Shoto?
Fortunately, Deku, Bakugo and Shoto all survived the war. Bakugo and Midoriya were hospitalized, as they nearly died in the war — Midoriya even thought that Bakugo was dead for a moment. They are both eventually able to fully recover, except that Midoriya is slowly becoming completely Quirkless, as previously mentioned.
Shoto was emotionally shaken during the war, since he had to fight againts his own brother, Toya, who became a Villain under the name Dabi. His brother is in a critical state after an intense fight against his own brother and father. Toya is taken to a hospital and his family visits him every day, but unfortunately, Dabi did not survive.
The three boys go on with their lives, following different paths after school. Eight years later, acompletely Quirkless Midoriya is now a teacher at U.A. High School, an ending that many fans did not like — he even invites Bakugo to become a guest teacher. He is alsostarting a relationship with Ochacho.
BothBakugo and Shoto became Pro Heroes. Shoto took over his father’s office and is now Number 2 on the Hero Billboard Chart in Japan. Bakugo, on the other hand, is Number 15 — while they were both important in the Final War, Bakugo has a personality that makes people afraid of him, and this kind of thing counts in the rankings. Everyone reunites to celebrate Shoto’s new rank, and they all have to act together briefly when a criminal Quirk notification is issued.
Why Is My Hero Academia Epilogue Controversial?
When the ending and, later, the additional epilogue came out, many fans werenot happy with the finale. This seems to be mostly because they expected thatDeku would end the story as Hero Number 1, and don’t see that much value in him ending the story as a Quirkless teacher.
Honestly, while it would be nice to see Deku as Number 1, becoming a teacher actually suits him, and it is a path that would certainly make this character very happy, considering his personality. Also, some fans didn’t like that Deku and Ochaco are now dating.
Many fans would also like to see Bakugo achieve his dream of becoming Hero Number 1, but that could even spawn a new story (with comedy tones), since Bakugo still has a long way to go to finally get there.
Will The My Hero Academia Anime End The Same Way As The Manga?
Some fans who were not satisfied with the ending hope thatthe anime will make relevant changesto the epilogue of the story. However, it is hard to believe that this will actually happen, considering that the anime is very faithful to the original story.
They may make small changes to some events or even additions that may further expand the finale of the manga. But it seems unlikely that the production team will significantly change the main events and their meaning.
Either way, fans will soon learn what kind of changes or additions the production team has in mind, since the Final Season will be released in October 2025 and will likely end in early 2026 — that is, ifMHAdoesn’t go the “Demon Slayerroute”, which would mean adapting the final moments of the final arc into a movie.

This school shapes young quirk users into future heroes through fake rescue missions, combat training, and other hero-tempering tasks. With young Deku inheriting the “One-For-All” quirk, he will learn what it means to be a true hero while facing off with dastardly supervillains.
