While all eyes may be on the Nintendo Switch 2 right now, Nintendo still has plenty of exciting games in the works for the originalSwitchconsole. The originalNintendo Switchhas been a massive success, to the point where it still stands a realistic shot of one day becoming the best-selling video game console of all time. The Switch 1 managed to pull off this ridiculous feat by providing an incredible library of games for fans to enjoy.
The original Switch is home to some of the highest-rated games of all time, like the open-world epicThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildand the beloved 3D platformerSuper Mario Odyssey. With theoriginal Switch having such a massive install base, it’s no surprise that Nintendo is not ready to leave it behind, and will in fact be releasing new games for the system this year and in 2026.
In its latest financial report, Nintendo decided to spotlight five games that are currently in development for the OG Switch. It pointed toPokemon Legends: Z-A, which is set to launch at some point in late 2025, andMetroid Prime 4: Beyond, a Switch game that was first announced in 2017 and is just now finally nearing release. As far as 2026 games go, Nintendo hasRhythm Heaven Grooveon the way for the Switch, as well asTomodachi Life: Living the Dream. The PvP gamePokemon Championsis also coming to the Switch, but it is currently stuck with a “TBD” release window, meaning it’s unclear if it will drop in 2025, 2026, or beyond.
New Switch Games in Development
Even after theSwitch 2 launches on June 5, Nintendo is not leaving the original Switch behind. However, it is giving fans incentives to buy Nintendo Switch 2 Editions of Switch 1 games. For example,Pokemon Legends: Z-AandMetroid Prime 4: Beyondwill be getting special Switch 2 Editions that take advantage of the new console’s capabilities. Fans that play the Switch 2 Editions of these games will enjoy performance boosts and new features, withMetroid Prime 4even supporting the Switch 2’s mouse controls.
It’s unclear if other Switch 1 games on the horizon, likeRhythm Heaven GrooveandTomodachi Life: Living the Dream, will have special Switch 2 Editions, but it seems likely. In the meantime, fans can also look forward to existingSwitch 1 games getting upgrades on the Switch 2, with upgrades in the works for bothZelda: Breath of the WildandTears of the Kingdom,Kirby and the Forgotten Land, andSuper Mario Party Jamboree.
