A key reason why the remake has been so successful is that it kept the original game underneath, improving on some of its shortcomings, but leaving the core gameplay untouched. However, given the infamy ofOblivion’s character models, this was one area where Virtuos was allowed to make radical changes.

Martin Septim looks like the spitting image of a young Uriel, while Jauffre has imperfect teeth. This is because certain characters, no matter their importance, use special models – with notable examples being Captain Renault and Valen Dreth. Other NPCs were made via the game’s character creator, but due to the graphical overhaul ofOblivion Remastered, even they exude a lot of character.

Given its popularity and the praise echoed throughout its community, it would arguably be a mistake for Bethesda not to use the positive feedback to deliver a worthy sequel toSkyrim. Ultimately,Oblivion Remasteredhas drawn a new audience to an old classic. It has reminded players of Bethesda’s greatest strength, and, due to combat improvements, delivered a truly addictive loop of delving into spriggan caves, bandit fortresses, Ayleid ruins, and even the fiery planes of Oblivion. Assuming its modding community kicks off, there’s a very good chance thatThe Elder Scrollsplayers will enjoyOblivion Remasteredfor years to come.
