Summary
Kohei Horikoshi’sMy Hero Academiahas introduced audiences to a massive cast of characters that are either incredible Pro Heroes or dangerous super villains (with a few exceptions). As a result of this series’ popularity and impact, most of these characters have become iconic staples of the shōnen action genre, like Izuku Midoriya, All Might, Katsuki Bakugo, and many more.
But not everyone can be so lucky, becausethe cast ofMy Hero Academiais so shockingly massive that there are a lot ofobscure charactersthat most fans have completely forgotten about, even though they possess unique quirks and interesting designs, not to mention that they actually have a name. Naturally, there are a lot of characters that fall into this unfortunate category, but the following are the most fascinating examples of this phenomenon.
1Toxic Chainsaw
A Strong Villain With An Infamous Reputation
There’s a common misconception in theMy Hero Academiafan base. Most people misinterpreted the conversation between Izuku Midoriya and All Might from chapter 1 and wrongly believe that an obscure villain known asToxic Chainsawis responsible for the massive scar on All Might’s chest, even though the #1 Pro Hero denied this claim(it would later be revealed that All For One did it).
However, the fact that Deku immediately brought up Toxic Chainsaw and legitimately believed that he could have left such a prominent scar on All Might’s body is a testament to how strong and dangerous he must be. Kohei Horikoshi later released a sketch of this villain, which gave fans a brief but fascinating look at this obscure character’s potential quirk and fighting style.
2The U.S.J. Villains
A Bunch Of Fodder With Solid Designs
Audiences immediately gravitated towardthe League of Villains when they invaded U.A. High School during the U.S.J. Arc, and some of its prominent figures, like Shigaraki or Kurogiri, quickly became fan favorites. But not many fans are aware that all the other minor characters they recruited for the attack on the Unforeseen Simulation Joint are fully named.
The mobile gameMy Hero Academia: The Strongest Herorevealed the names and quirks of all of these obscure characters, with some of the most notorious ones beingVictor,Stitched Giant,Needle Hair,Steel Bulwark,Minotaurus,Bye-Bites, andInvisible Wall. It’s a real shame that these villains were just random fodder meant to be quickly defeated by the U.A. students and All Might, because they do have interesting designs and quirks that could have resulted in more epic fights against the heroes if they ever reappeared in later arcs.
3Daikaku Miyagi
A Famous Newscaster With A Notorious Quirk
The world-building ofMy Hero Academiais truly fascinating, as the series never fails to show the lives of regular people who decided not to become heroes or villains and how their bizarre quirks affect their jobs. An interesting example of this type of character isDaikaku Miyagi, a prominent newscaster who reports and comments on the actions of heroes and villains on television.
His quirk is called Big Horn, and it makes two giant horns grow on his forehead, even though he’s missing one. In Volume 7 of the manga, Horikoshi revealed that Daikaku voluntarily cut off one of his horns so it was easier for him to appear on his show, but this action prompted the anger of human rights groups, who saw it as a sign of Daikaku rejecting his Mutant-Type quirk.
4Moko Tamashi
The Last Civilian Who All Might Saved Before Retiring
All Might has saved thousands of people throughout his extensive career as a Pro Hero and the Symbol of Peace, so obviously not all of them are going to be relevant characters, but there is one special exception, and her name isMoko Tamashi. Most fans may not even remember her or be aware that she has a name, but she’s the woman whom All Might rescued during his final fight with All For One,right before he lost One For All and had to retire.
Moko reappeared during the Dark Hero Arc, where it was revealed that she constantly tried to keep the All Might statue on Kamino clean from all the vandalism it was suffering after the events of the Paranormal Liberation War. This was a brief but heartwarming scene that properly showcased the positive impact All Might had on society, even after his abrupt retirement.
5Teruo Hazukashi
A Villainous But Harmless Office Worker With A Pathetic Quirk
Not every single criminal that the Pro Heroes have to take down can be considered villains, because some of them are just regular civilians who were going through a rough time and mistakenly decided to use their quirks in negative ways.Teruo Hazukashiis a notorious example of this tragic phenomenon, as he’s a disgruntled office worker who wanted to take revenge on the company he was working for (although he was also inspired by Destro’s autobiography).
Teruo took off all his clothes in public to use his Shame quirk, which allows him to become more powerful the more embarrassed he feels. Fortunately, he was stopped by Hawks before he could go even further, and he was never seen again. Despite his embarrassing actions, Teruo was ultimately so harmless that he couldn’t even be considered a villain, and it’s most likely that he returned to his normal life after spending some time in prison.
6Hiroshi Tameda
The Real Identity Of The “Can’t You See?” Kid
The climactic encounter between Endeavor and Hood was a key moment in the series that provedEnji Todoroki was worthy of becoming Japan’s new #1 Pro Hero. But his reputation was undoubtedly boosted by a young boy who appeared on a television broadcast, asking the viewers to believe in Endeavor and keep rooting for him during his intense battle against the powerful Nomu.
Because of his inspiring attitude and signature catchphrase, this boy became an in-universe meme by the name of“Can’t You See?” Kid, but his actual name isHiroshi Tameda. Needless to say, Endeavor is his favorite hero, and he briefly reappeared during the Final War Arc, rooting for him and the other Pro Heroes. Due to his pink hair and admiration for a character with fire-based powers, many fans believe that Hiroshi is a reference to Natsu Dragneel fromFairy Tail(they even share voice actors in the English Dub).
7Untenmaru Kurumada
Endeavor’s Extravagant Chauffeur
The Endeavor Agency Arc gave audiences a closer look at Enji Todoroki’s personal life, which included the introduction of his chauffeur, an aggressive and over-the-top mustachioed man who could go toe-to-toe against Katsuki Bakugo in a screaming match.
This obscure but hilarious character left an impact on fans, and they most likely have no idea that he’s calledUntenmaru Kurumada. Despite his abrasive personality, he takes his job very seriously, since he was seen working for the Todoroki family even after the events of the Final War Arc. Curiously enough, his profile from Volume 26 revealed that Untenmaru’s favorite things in the world are flowers.
8Mawata Fuwa
A Pro Hero From Class 2-A Who Deserved More Screen Time
The plot ofMy Hero Academiais centered on Deku’s class during his first year at U.A. High School, but even the third and final year was made relevant when the Big 3 were introduced later down the line. Weirdly enough, however, there are no important characters in the series that originate from U.A.’s second year, and only one of them actually has a name:Mawata Fuwa.
She has an admittedly interesting design, especially when she’s wearing her hero costume, but she was sadly never seen in action, meaning that her quirk and her hero name are completely unknown. Mawata seems like a good girl and an efficient Pro Hero, so it’s a real shame that audiences never got the chance to find out more about her or any of her fellow Class 2-A classmates.
