Summary

One Piecehas a massive cast that’s made up of literally thousands ofcharacters that have appeared in the story throughout its 28-year-long run. Fortunately, most of them are likable, appealing and have been cemented as some of the most iconic figures in anime and manga, like Luffy, Nami, Zoro, Shanks, Roger, etc.

But, not everyone in this ambitious story about pirates is quite so easy to love, because many of them are extremely despicable instead. Author Eiichiro Oda has created a fair share of characters that the audience is meant to hate, because they are important to the story, but their inevitable comeuppance is very satisfying to watch. Needless to say, there are a lot of truly hateable characters inOne Piece, but the following eight are the absolute worst ones in the series.

8Caesar Clown

A Twisted, Evil Scientist That Experimented On Children

There are a lot of brilliant but malicious scientists in the world ofOne Piece(most of whom were actually part of MADS) but one of the most notorious ones isCaesar Clown. For starters,he spent most of his introductory arc poisoning Luffy and his allies with his toxic gases, taking pleasure in their suffering and mocking them with his annoying (albeit admittedly iconic) laugh.

But the thing that cemented Caesar as one of the most loathsome figures in the world ofOne Pieceis the fact that he has repeatedly experimented on innocent people and, to make things even worse, children that were kidnapped from their families are his most common victims. This has made both the audience and the Straw Hat Pirates truly despise Caesar Clown and, it doesn’t matter how funny he may seem at times, he is never going to be redeemed nor become a good guy.

7Vinsmoke Judge

Sanji’s Cold And Abusive Father

Vinsmoke Judgeis yet another evil scientist who was part of MADS alongside Caesar Clown, but what he did is arguably even worse:he not only experimented on kids, he did it to his own children. His main goal was to alter their genetics in order to turn them into super-powered warriors with no emotions, but when Sanji was born without any enhancements, Judge didn’t hesitate to abuse, disown and even imprison him.

Sanji was able to escape his family and live a fruitful life with the Straw Hat Pirates, until Judge decided to make an unforeseen alliance with the Big Mom Pirates and blackmail him in order to make him marry one of Big Mom’s daughters. When the Emperor of the Sea eventually betrayed him, Judge cried like a baby, showcasing those same emotions that he deprived his children of. To make things even worse, after Sanji saved him and repeatedly proved how strong and skilled he was, Judge kept insulting and undermining him.

6Spandam

A Nepotist Coward Who Relentlessly Tortured Robin

When it comes to the main antagonist of a story arc, few of them are as obnoxious asSpandam, the chief of Cipher Pol 9 in the Enies Lobby Arc. Audiences should not let themselves be fooled by his prestigious position; he only got it because he’s the son of CP9’s previous chief, Spandine. As a result, it should be no surprise that Spandam has no battle prowess, and he orders his agents to do the fighting for him instead.

But that’s only the tip of the iceberg, because Spandam has done some truly heinous things to two of the Straw Hat Pirates. Firstly, he stole Franky’s battleships and used them to attack Water 7 in order to frame him and have his mentor, Tom, be executed. Secondly, during the Enies Lobby Arc, he repeatedly tortured and assaulted a captured Nico Robin, who could do absolutely nothing to fight back.Fortunately, she was eventually able to get her revenge and broke his spine in half. Unfortunately, Spandam survived that attack and was promoted to CP0, which made fans hate him even more.

5Absalom

A Creepy Pervert With An Annoying Personality

The very first scene in whichAbsalomwas introduced, he assaulted Nami while she was naked in the shower, and it was not played for laughs: he was supposed to come off as creepy and disturbing. Things didn’t get much better for his reputation during the rest of the Thriller Bark Arc, seeing as he kidnapped Nami, tried to force her to marry him and fought with Sanji over who deserved to wield the invisibility powers of Suke Suke no Mi to spy on women.

Needless to say, Absalom is both annoying and disgusting, and many Sanji fans even cite him as the reason the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates began acting more and more perverted near the end of the pre-time skip era. Absalom is so despicable that he was unceremoniously killed off-screen by the Blackbeard Piratesand no one (aside from Gecko Moria) seems to care or even remember that he died.

4Kurozumi Orochi

Wano’s Cruel Dictator Is Also A Resentful Traitor

There’s no denying thatKurozumi Orochi’sbackstory is unfair and tragic, but it still doesn’t justify any of his actions. He exploited and betrayed many people that had helped him out (like the Oden Family or Shimotsuki Yasuie) and took over Wano with the help of the Beasts Pirates. But at least Kaido is so intimidating and powerful that he has earned his reputation, whereas Orochi is a coward who spends all day in his castle, surrounded by alcohol and oirans.

Orochi is entirely responsible for Wano’s downfall, and he never seemed to have a parcel of remorse for having ruined his own country, contaminating its environment and enslaving its inhabitants. Furthermore, he also assigned one of his relatives, Kurozumi Kanjuro, to infiltrate the Nine Red Scabbards and eventually betray them so he couldn’t be stopped by the very same people whose lives he had ruined many years in the past. Nevertheless, Orochi was killed during the Raid on Onigashima and, thanks to his Yamata no Orochi Devil Fruit,he was beheaded eight different times, which was quite satisfying to watch.

3Sakazuki (Akainu)

A Ruthless Marine Who Killed A Beloved Character

Sakazukiwas introduced during the Ohara Incident flashback, where he was seen ordering the destruction of a ship filled with civilians, just in case one of Ohara Archeologists happened to sneak on board. This immediately made him come off as ruthless and violent, not to mention that it was a perfect example of how his Absolute Justice mentality works: Sakazuki is always focused on eradicating all evil from the world, no matter what.

As an admiral, he had a prominent role during the Marineford Arc, in which he was positioned at the forefront of the Summit War on the side of the Marines. He killed innocent marine soldiers who tried to flee from the battlefield, he tried to kill Koby when he asked for the war to stop, and, to top it all off,he murdered Portgas D. Ace right in front of Luffy after provoking him. Throughout his unforgivable actions, the story has successfully established Sakazuki as one of the coldest and most cruel antagonists in the series, and now that he’s the Fleet Admiral of the Marines, he’s definitely going to be a major obstacle for the Straw Hats and their allies in the near future.

2Saint Jaygarcia Saturn

One Of The Five Elders Is The Most Evil And Cruel Scientist In The World

As the heads of the World Government and the figures responsible for almost every single injustice in theOne Pieceworld, all the Five Elders are quite hateable characters, but one of them stands out over the rest due to his involvement in the story. SaintJaygarcia Saturnwas the Warrior God of Science and Defense and, as such, he was one of the most cruel and inhumane scientists in the entire series. Since he’s a Celestial Dragon, it should be no surprise that he’s a supremacist who believes that certain races deserve to be enslaved.

Bartholomew Kuma’s flashback detailed all the heinous things that Saturn has done over the years, like attacking the young Buccaneer during the God Valley Incident, experimenting on Ginny and forcibly making her the wife of another world noble, blackmailing Kuma into becoming a Warlord of the Sea in exchange for Bonney’s life-saving surgery and turning him into a mindless cyborg slave. Additionally, when he appeared in Egghead and transformed into his gigantic beast form, he kept relentlessly attacking and insulting the Straw Hats and Doctor Vegapunk. Fortunately, Saturn eventually got his rightful comeuppance not once but twice: when Kuma punched him in the face during the Egghead Arc and when Imu killed him because he failed to fulfill his objectives. So, regardless of how evil he once was, at least Saturn is gone now, and he can’t harm others anymore.

1Saint Charlos

The Most Despicable Celestial Dragon In The Series

Naturally, all the Celestial Dragons could easily be considered the most hateable characters inOne Piece, as they are a group of elitist aristocrats who see everybody else as inferior to them, to the point that they even wear special helmets to avoid breathing the same air as the commoners. But there’s one specific Celestial Dragon that stood out from the rest becausehe embodies everything that makes this group so inherently loathsome, and his name is SaintCharlos.

When he was first introduced during the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, Charlos came off as a spoiled brat who didn’t hesitate to enslave any civilian he encountered, including married women he would add to his enormous harem. He also discriminated against other species, like merfolk or fish-men, which resulted in him trying to buy Camie as a slave and shooting Hatchan for no real reason. It seems old habits die hard because, two years later, he tried to kidnap and enslave Princess Shirahoshi in the middle of the Levely on two different occasions. However, there’s a silver lining to Charlos’ disgusting personality and despicable actions, and it’s the fact that he has become a punching bag throughout the series: first, he was punched in the face by Luffy, then he was struck in the face by Mjosgard and, lastly, he was attacked on the head by Sai and Leo. Everyone can agree that all the scenes in which Charlos was punished are among some of the most satisfying moments in the series.
