Summary

Different from many other power systems in anime, Devil Fruits inOne Piecehas always had a few interesting concepts that set them apart. Going beyond the usual differences, like the unique subtypes of Devil Fruits or the idea of awakening, Devil Fruits have the strange ability to return to circulation after the original user dies. Although death isn’t the most common thing in the series, there are plenty of Devil Fruit users who have permanently died.

Although the audience has seen many of these deceased characters’ Devil Fruits be claimed, like Sabo claiming Ace’s fruit, or Blackbeard claiming Whitebeard’s, there are a handful of Devil Fruits that should currently be in circulation. Whether these characters have died too recently in the story to warrant a new user for their Devil Fruit or their fruit itself wouldn’t have a meaningful impact on the story ofOne Piece, these Devil Fruits have not seen the light of day since the death of their original users. Still, since these Devil Fruits are currently up for grabs, there is always the chance that they could appear before the end of the Final Saga.

Devil Fruits Return To The Earth When The User Dies

This Creates An Endless Cycle Of Devil Fruit

Firstly, Devil Fruits have supposedly existed for hundreds of years at the very least, with Devil Fruits like the Human-Human Fruit Model: Nika existing for at least eight centuries. With hundreds of these fruits and no duplicates of each individual ability, theOne PieceDevil Fruitoutlive their original owners and are eventually passed down to future generations. Mainly, after the death of a Devil Fruit user, their Devil Fruit will manifest in place of a nearby normal fruit, once again returning the fruit to circulation.

One Piece Monet

After the death of a Devil Fruit user, many of the fruits are quickly eaten and passed on to the next generation. Although almost every fruit has likely gone through this scenario at least once, fans have actively seen characters die and pass on their fruit a handful of times. Outside of Whitebeard and Ace, fans also hadthe chance to witness Absalom’s death, which led to the Blackbeard Pirates claiming the Clear-Clear Fruit and giving it to Shiryu. However, although the Blackbeard Pirates seem to have discovered the secret to seamlessly transfer abilities, most Devil Fruits are sent to a random location and may be fairly difficult to discover, leading to many fruits being without any users in the current arc of the story.

Last User

Smiley

First up, a strange Devil Fruit, and one of the first examples of passing on Devil Fruits that fans had the chance to see, isthe Sala-Sala Fruit Model: Axolotl. This fruit is a Zoan-type Devil Fruit that gives the user the ability to turn into an axolotl, though since axolotls are amphibious and need water to stay moist and survive, this fruit may be fairly impractical. However, for Smiley, the living poisonous weapon, whose purpose was to die, this fruit was perfect, though after his death on Punk Hazard, the fruit manifested nearby, yet was never reclaimed by Caesar as he originally planned.

Monet

Next is the Snow-Snow Fruit, a Devil Fruit originally used by Monet duringthe Punk Hazard Arc. This snow Logia-type Fruit allows the user to become and control snow, acting as a weaker version of the Ice-Ice Fruit. However, after Monet was accidentally killed by Caesar, the fruit has gone back into rotation and hasn’t been seen since.

Rosinante

Following this,in the Dressrosa Arc, the audience was introduced to the fan-favorite character Donquixote Rosinante, aka Corazon, and his Calm-Calm Fruit. This fruit gives the user the ability to create soundproof barriers, as well as cancel out all noise in an area, making it ideal for stealth-based missions. However, after Doflamingo murdered his own brother, the fruit has not been seen since.

Toki

Next up isKouzuki Toki and the Time-Time Fruit, an overpowered ability that appeared during the Wano Arc. This power gives the user the ability to send the user or others to the future, though it must send them to the same location, and does not have the ability to send them back. After using this power one last time to send her son, Momonosuke, as well as four of the scabbards to the modern era ofOne Piece, Toki was killed by the beast pirates, putting the Devil Fruit back in rotation.

Kanjuro

After betraying the land of Wano, Kanjuro and his Brush-Brush Fruit were defeated duringthe Wano Arc ofOne Piece. This Devil Fruit gave the user the ability to create drawings that would come to life, allowing the user to create weapons, food, and potentially, living creatures. However, after Kanjuro is killed by Kin’emon and Kikunojo, the fruit does not make an appearance in the series.

Orochi

Finally, the last officially named Devil Fruit to return to circulation throughoutOne Pieceisthe Snake-Snake Fruit Model: Yamata-no-Orochi. Originally owned by Orochi, this mythical Zoan Devil Fruit gave the user the ability to transform into an eight-headed snake, as well as giving the user the ability to survive decapitation seven times before dying to the eighth. However, after Denjiro delivered the final blow to Orochi on Wano, the fruit, like each other on the list, returned to circulation and was never seen again.

Lastly, although it hasn’t been officially named,St. Saturn’s Devil Fruit, which allowed him to transform into a Gyuki could still be in rotation. However, the rest of these fruits are the Devil Fruits, which are definitely in rotation, yet, for one reason or another, haven’t been reintroduced to the series. Whether it be because they are too powerful, like with the Toki-Toki Fruit, or too useless, like with the Axolotl Fruit, it seems unlikely that most of these fruits will return in a meaningful way toOne Piece.
