Summary

Overwatch 2recently shared a few hero skin ideas that didn’t make the cut during theStreet Fighter 6collaboration, including Ken Hanzo, Ken Genji, and Dee Jay Lucio. Though these combinations didn’t make it into this collaboration,Overwatch 2is not against doing so if it has the chance to do a second crossover withStreet Fighter.

TheStreet Fighter 6collaboration is set to arrive inOverwatch 2on May 20. Featuring eight different skins – Chun-Li Juno, Ryu Hanzo, Dhalsim Zenyatta, M. Bison Sigma, Juri Kiriko, Cammy Widowmaker, Blanka Winston, and Guile Soldier: 76 – theOverwatch 2xStreet Fighter 6crossover is Blizzard’s largest external IP collab to date.

Just ahead of the event’s arrival,Overwatch 2has revealed even more information about the crossover – including whichStreet Fightercharacters weren’t able to be included. During aninterview with ComicBook,Overwatch 2art director Dion Rogers brought up Ken as a character he would have liked to add in some form. “Maybe Ken would have been an awesome one to get to,” he admitted. “A cool recolor for Hanzo or at least explore Genji.” As Ryu’s mirror since the originalStreet Fighter, Ken Genji would have been a natural fit to face off against his brother’s collab skin.

Could Overwatch 2 Do Another Street Fighter 6 Collab?

ComicBook also cited Dee Jay Lucio as an idea the community had rallied behind when the collaboration was first announced due to the similarities betweenStreet Fighter 6’s Jamaican dance music superstarandOverwatch 2’s Brazilian audio medic. While the combo was not considered at the time, Rogers admitted it “sounds awesome.” The art director went on to say, “We’ll get there, maybe one day,” implying a second collaboration in the future is not off the table.

We’ll get there, maybe one day.

Regardless, as far asOverwatch 2collaborations are concerned,Street Fighterseems to be a natural fit. To create the crossover, Blizzard enlisted Arnold Tsang – art director of Azuki and formerly of bothOverwatchandOverwatch 2– to assist. An avidStreet Fighterfan, Tsang cited the fighting game as a major inspiration during the development of the originalOverwatch. Even the worldbuilding had a lot of similarities, with both games featuring heroes from different nations, along with matching maps. Though they had to pick and choose for this collab, Tsang joked that there are enough characters in both games that one “can literally make a [Street Fighter] skin for every single hero inOverwatch.”

Of note, this crossover is not only the largest Blizzard has ever done for the FPS, but also one of the swiftest.Overwatch 2only just finished itsGundam Wingcollaborationless than a month ago, only to roll out theStreet Fightercrossover in nearly half the time that would normally be found between these events. While this quickened timeline is a result ofOverwatch 2getting better at putting together collaborations, players shouldn’t expect two crossovers a season to be the new norm, even if the team would love to make that happen. “If we can, we’ll do it,” Rogers said. “We’ll try.”
