In a genre where games are often defined by what friendships form between the player and villagers,Pixelshireleans in hard on this belovedfarming sim mechanic. Characters can even be brought with the player as they explore Arcadia, making those all-important connections even deeper.
Game Rant spoke toPixelshire’s creator Vasileios Karagiannakis in an interview about how the new game fits into the broader farming sim landscape. This interview took place shortly before the release of Pixelshire. This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.
Pixelshire Isn’t Reinventing the Wheel
Q: What drew you to the farming sim genre?
A:Pixelshiredraws inspiration from beloved titles likeLittlewood,Stardew Valley, andAnimal Crossing, blending their best elements with my personal touch to create a cozy yet adventurous experience.
Q: What makes the game stand out from other cozy farming games?
A:Honestly, my goal wasn’t to reinvent the genre or create a specific feature that nobody ever did before, but to bring together proven mechanics I’ve loved in other games and combine them into one cohesive and enjoyable experience–and I think that’s what helpsPixelshirestand out. Some of myfavorite features include terrain manipulation, which allows players to terraform the landscape and design a truly personalized town, and “Buddy Mode” where NPC companions can assist with tasks like farming or gathering resources. For example, if you’ve built a friendship with the logger, he might join you in cutting down trees.
Exploring Pixelshire and Arcadia
Q: Can you introduce some of the characters players can meet? Who are your personal favorites?
A:Pixelshire features a vibrant cast of NPCs, each with unique personalities, quests, and storylines. You’ll meet Margarita, a compassionate farmer; Bron, a dedicated dwarf miner; and Eva, the passionate mayor. My personal favorite is Captain Farrell–and I have a feeling he’ll be yours too.
Q: How does bringing friends around Arcadia affect player relationships in Pixelshire?
A:“Buddy Mode” fosters a deeper sense of connection and immersion. Everyday tasks feel more engaging when shared with an NPC companion. NPCs are dynamic and responsive–they move freely, react to terrain changes, and adapt to your evolving town layout.
Q: Are there any limitations on the Follow Me mechanic, such as friendship levels orschedules?
A:Yes. Players need to build at leasta basic level of friendship with a characterbefore they’ll assist you. NPCs are also unavailable at night, and some areas may limit their ability to accompany you.
Q: What can you tell us about the land of Arcadia–its environments and history?
A:Arcadia is a newly discovered island continent in a larger world, full of mystery and mostly unexplored. It’s divided into diverse regions, each featuring its own distinct environment–from enchanted forests and deserts to icy plains.
Q: What kind of treasures can players find across the continent?
A:The most valuable treasures are the people you meet who can join your town. Building and growing a thriving community is at the heart of Pixelshire’s experience.
Q: Can you describe the dungeons scattered across Arcadia?
A:The dungeons–mainly mines–are rich in ores and precious minerals. They’re multi-layered and filled with dangerous enemies, offering challenge and reward in equal measure.
Q: What kinds of skills can players unlock?
A:As players build relationships with villagers, they’llgain access to various skills, including farming, combat, and magic. Each villager has something unique to offer based on their background and expertise.
Q: Why was terraforming and town customization a priority for you?
A:I’ve always loved games that let players shape their own worlds. Giving players the freedom to customize their environment fosters a stronger emotional connection to the game. Terraforming in Pixelshire allows each player to truly make the world their own.
Q: What does the road to release day look like?
A:Right now, we’re fully focused on polishing the game, fixing bugs, and ensuring everything runs smoothly at launch. There’s a mix of anxiety, impatience, and fatigue as we approach release–but it’s all part of the journey.
Q: Are there plans for a post-release roadmap?
A:Definitely. I had so many ideas I wanted to include in the initial release but cramming them all in would have delayed the game for years—and I probably still wouldn’t have been satisfied! Several features currently in the concept or testing stage will be rolled out after launch.
Also, community feedback has always played a key roleinPixelshire’s development and will continue to do so. It guides decisions on updates, balance, and content expansions. For example, Multiplayer is one of the most requested features. While I can’t make any promises due to its complexity and cost, we’ll definitely consider it if the game performs well.
Q: Anything else you’d like to share?
A:Pixelshire’s release is a major milestone–but it’s just the beginning. There’s so much more planned. For now, our focus is on launching smoothly and supporting players with any issues that may arise. After release, I’ll take the time to put together a clear roadmap, so everyone knows what exciting things are coming next.
