Summary
APokemonfan has mashed up the game withAssassin’s Creed, turning Squirtle into a member of the Assassin Brotherhood. The cute redesign is just one of many examples of combiningPokemonwith other media franchises and games.
While most Pokemon designs have fans, that doesn’t stop artistically-inclined members of the community from redesigning them to their hearts' content. It’s common forPokemon to get new forms, evolutions, or regional variations in fanart, while others look to influences outside ofPokemonto give the pocket monsters a new look, like in this particular case.
On Reddit, user HFernandes_DG has shared the redesign they’ve done of Squirtle, turning it into an assassin fromAssassin’s Creed. Dubbing it “Assassin’s Squirtle,” this new version of Squirtle looks like it’s ready to take down a target at any moment. Squirtle stands in an action pose, with the classic hood and cloak, with theAssassin insigniacentered on its chest. Of course, it wouldn’t be complete without the iconic hidden blade, which looks like it’s become part of Squirtle, rather than being worn, with a single metallic claw jutting out of its left hand. Topping it all off is a rather devious expression on Squirtle’s face, making it look like the assassin pocket monster is ready to kill its target.
Both the artist and fans have now added clever nods to theAssassin’s Creedseries. The artist included the iconic Ezio quote, “When I was young, I had liberty, but I didn’t know it.” A commenter imagined Squirtle saying, in Pokemon language where they simply say their own names, “Everything is permitted.”
Pokemon Mash-Ups are a Popular Theme for Fanart
As mentioned, this is far from the first time that Pokemon has crossed over unofficially with other franchises courtesy of the fans. Previously, fans have done things like combinedPokemonandHarry Potter, as well asturning Cubone into a Demon Slayer, or finding influence fromDoctor Strangein Alakazam fanart. Fans frequently come up with ideas due to similarities between Pokemon and characters from other franchises. Part of the fun is that thanks to the artists' imaginations, they can combine thePokemonseries with other franchises that would likely never have a chance to become part of thePokemonuniverse.
On the game side of things, these two franchises are just as alive as ever.Assassin’s Creedjust recently saw the release ofAssassin’s Creed Shadows, which is set in Japan, whilePokemonis gearing up forthe release ofPokemon Legends: Z-Alater in 2025. As thePokemongame approaches its release, chances are a lot more fanart will appear based on the places and Pokemon of the game, and perhaps some neat new mash-ups, as well.
