Summary
APokemonfan has shared their concepts for what prehistoric Unown could look like if they were to be added to the games. While it’s been quite some time since Unown got any new forms or was the focus of a mainlinePokemongame, it seems that fans are still imagining creative new ideas for the Pokemon.
Unown is unique among Pokemon for having a multitude of potential appearances. The Pokemon line is based upon the Latin alphabet, with 28 different forms. This hasn’t changed since Gen 3 of thePokemongames, butfans have come up with new Unown formsregardless.
On Reddit,Pokemonfan artist Matratzfratz has shared their idea for what Unown could have looked like in prehistoric times. Their version of Unown turns the Pokemon into aPsychic/Rock-type, and the lore indicates that the Pokemon were illustrated onto cave walls by ancient people. As a result, these versions of Unown look like some of the common subjects of ancient cave paintings in real life, like bulls and wild animals. Matratzfratz specifically based the unique Unown forms off of birds, mammoths, fish, rhinoceros, bulls, and lions.
Pokemon Fans Discuss Concept of Prehistoric Unown
In general, fans seem to be really pleased with the concept ofancient Unownthat predate the use of the modern alphabet. Some fans imagined Unown gradually changing over time, morphing from mimicry of cave paintings to cuneiforms, and finally to the Latin alphabet-based 28 known today. Some were reminded of the Nazca lines looking at these takes on Unown, while others added more ideas, like the notion of aPokemongame based on the Pokemon world’s take on Norway having rune-like Unown. Others suggested that if all of these prehistoric Unown were gathered together, they should fuse together into a single Pokemon.
A common sentiment that was also shared is that Unown could have been better than it ultimately ended up being in the actual games. As noted, the officialPokemongames seem to have largely moved on from doing anything significant with Unown, who hasn’t seen any real changes since Gen 4, when modifications were made to how an Unown’s appearance is determined. Fans have previously imaginedunique Unownbased off of hieroglyphics and other language systems, so it seems that fans would be happy to see more of the Pokemon, especially if it got much-needed tweaks or changes by way of evolution or fusion, making it more suitable for intense battles.
