There may not be any official confirmation ofInjustice 3at the moment, but it’s not an impossibility, either. Developer NetherRealm Studios' love for the fighting genre was showcased in a new light with theInjusticefranchise, and the potential forInjustice 3keeps a lot of fans still filled with hope for another entry.

As the studio responsible for the long-runningMortal Kombatfranchise, NetherRealm has sprinkled some of its most notable characters from the series into theInjusticegames. NetherRealm is no stranger to fun crossovers. Even with its most recent game,Mortal Kombat 1,characters like Conan the Barbarianand Ghostface have padded out the game’s fighter roster. Considering these crossovers have become tradition, it wouldn’t be surprising ifInjustice 3featured other selectMortal Kombatnames.

If Injustice 3 Introduces More Mortal Kombat Characters, NetherRealm Will Have to Choose Wisely

Injustice 2’s Controversial Double Dose of Mortal Kombat

While the inclusion ofMortal KombatcharactersinInjusticehas been received well by a lot of players, there was also controversy surroundingInjustice 2having two characters, instead of the last game’s one. The firstInjusticeadded Scorpion, whileInjustice 2featured both Sub-Zero and Raiden. The biggest critique of the extraMortal Kombatcontent was that a lot of players were disappointed that two character slots were taken up, when NetherRealm could have used the second space for a fresh crossover option. Controversy aside, there are a few strong options forInjustice 3to use as itsMortal Kombatoffering.

Injustice 2was released back in 2017, making it eight long years since the last entry in the series.

Liu Kang

Liu Kang has taken on the role of one of the most important characters inMortal Kombat 1’s fresh timeline. After winning control of the Hourglass,Liu Kang started history over from scratch, setting into motion theMortal Kombatfranchise’s soft reboot. It proved to be a fascinating shake-up for the series that helpedMortal Kombat 1feel fresh in a lot of ways. Because of his role in the new timeline, Liu Kang appearing inInjustice 3wouldn’t be too surprising.

Johnny Cage

A fan favorite, Johnny Cage seems like another strong choice forInjustice 3. As an action star with a larger-than-life ego, Johnny Cage is a hilarious contrast to the god-like abilities held by many ofMortal Kombat’s characters. WithInjustice’s superhero focus, this same contrast could easily be repeated, and seeing Johnny go head-to-head withthe likes of Supermanor Wonder Woman is bound to be entertaining.

Johnny Cage will be played by Karl Urban in the upcoming live-actionMortal Kombatsequel. The film is set to hit theaters on July 13, 2025.

Shao Kahn

With his brute strength, hulking size, and iconic appearance, Shao Kahn has beenone ofMortal Kombat’s most notable antagonists.Injustice 3making its chosenMortal Kombatcrossover a full-blown villain character would be a fun way to shake up player expectations. Any of these characters from the fighting franchise would be exciting to see inInjustice 3, but Shao Kahn’s long-running reign as a powerful villain could prove to be a strong choice.

Right Now, Injustice 3 Remains a Mystery

There has yet to be any official word from NetherRealm regarding the status ofInjustice 3. However, the future may hold a lot of hope for a third game.DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safranhave confirmed that they have spoken with both NetherRealm and Rocksteady about potential future game projects. Of course, this is far from a confirmation, but if Gunn and Safran’s new DC cinematic universe is received well, it could pave the way for a newInjusticegame.
