Summary
A credible source has claimed Rockstar Games is gearing up to release a current-gen port ofGrand Theft Auto4laterthis year. The studio was initially set to launch the next instalment in theGrand Theft Autoseries later this year, but a recent delay has pushed the title into 2026. However, it has now been suggested that aGrand Theft Autogame will be released this year after all, with the iconic 2008 title supposedly receiving a re-release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
After the hugely successful release ofGrand Theft Auto 5in 2013, fans of the series have been eager to know when they’ll be able to get their hands on the next entry. After finally releasing the first trailer forGrand Theft Auto 6in 2023, Rockstar Games remained silent for over 500 days. The studio’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, reiterated the Fall 2025 release window multiple times over the months, but fans were hit with disappointing news last week when Rockstar announced thatGrand Theft Auto 6had been delayed to Jul 30, 2025. While there’s still one year left to go, fans may still be getting their hands on anotherGrand Theft Autogame later this year after all.
GTA 4 Possibly Coming to Current-Gen Consoles This Year
WhileGrand Theft Auto 5has received multiple re-releasesover the years, fans have begged Rockstar Games to bring 2008’sGrand Theft Auto 4to current-gen consoles for years. Now, according to credibleGTAinsider Tez2, development on aGrand Theft Auto 4current-gen port should be approximately one year into development and may possibly release later this year. “We may end up seeing it drop later this year,” the insider said onGTA Forums. It is worth noting that the insider refers to its release as a “port” and not a “remaster,” indicating it will likely feature FPS improvements and possibly some minor graphical updates.
Earlier this year, Rockstar Games quicklyshut down a popular Liberty City mod forGrand Theft Auto 5. The mod, which was known as the Liberty City Preservation Project, brought the iconic 2008 map toGrand Theft Auto 5with a fully functioning mini-map, an operational public transport system, authentic pedestrians, and the ability to seamlessly travel between Los Santos and Liberty City. Insider Tez2 has now claimed that the mod was likely shut down due to Rockstar Games' upcoming port ofGrand Theft Auto 4. If the current-gen version proves to be real, Rockstar would not have wanted a fan-made mod to encroach on the game’s re-release.
The insider also claimed that if Rockstar is still “[following] their plan laid out from the pandemic days,” then fans can also expect a current-gen port ofMax Payne 3to be released afterGrand Theft Auto 4. This would likely align with theupcomingMax Payne 1and2remakesthat are currently in development at Remedy Entertainment. While there is no confirmed release date for the remakes, Remedy revealed in February that the remakes have now officially entered “full production” and are making “steady progress” on the titles. WithGrand Theft Auto 6just one year away, it’s likely that theMax Payneremakes won’t be released until after the nextGTAgame is launched.
