Summary
AnotherMario Kart-basedLEGOset might have just been leaked, this one being modded after the infamous and iconic Spiny Shell power-up. Nintendo andLEGOhave been partnering together to produce building sets based on the former’s most recognized franchises for a few years now, with a few drawing from theMario Kartseries. Donkey Kong’s DK Jumbo Kart and Toad’s Garage have been recreated in LEGO form, and earlier this year LEGO announced a massiveMario Kartset based on Mario himself.
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to new LEGOMario Kartsets being released in 2025. Earlier this month, a new wave ofNintendo-based LEGO kits was announced, including three modeled after characters, vehicles, and locations fromMario Kart. Starting on August 1, fans will be able to add Mario’s standard red go-kart, Wario’s purple hot rod, and King Boo’s Teddy Buggy to their buildable garages, as well as race through Bowser’s lava-filled castle.
A new leak suggests that another staple of theMario Kartfranchise could be getting a LEGO set of its own soon, as reported byInsider Gaming. TheBrick Built BlogsTwitter account recently shared a low-resolution image of box art for an apparent set modeled after the Blue Shell power-up. According to this leak, the set will reportedly be named “Spiny Shell,” consisting of 234 pieces, and will be released in May 2025 as an Insider Reward exclusive.
LEGO Mario Kart Blue Shell Set Could Be Coming Soon
The Blue Shell, or “Spiny Shell” as it is officially called, first appeared as an offensive power-up in the originalMario Kart 64and has been an iconic pick-upthroughout theMario Kartseries. Sometimes sporting wings to go with the spikes on its back, the Spiny Shell seeks out the racer in First Place, dodging any obstacles in its way and making a massive explosion on impact. For the racer in the lead, the sound of the Spiny Shell closing in on its target brings much dread, as there is little they can do to avoid it save for a well-timed power-up of their own.
The newly leaked image of the LEGO Spiny Shell could be fake, as the alleged photo of the box art is rather low-quality. However, withLEGO releasing more sets inspired byMario Kartthis year, now might be a great time for one based on the series’ most famous offensive power-up. Meanwhile, the Spiny Shell will make its explosive return inMario Kart World, which is being released as a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title.
