Summary

TheNintendo Switch 2could be getting aRed Dead Redemption 2port as early as this year, according to a recent rumor. After Nintendo gave fans a closer look at the console and announced a slew of incoming third-party games in April, speculation about what else could come to the system has taken off. One of the latest suggests that not only will theNintendo Switch 2get support forRDR2, but it will arrive before the year is over.

With less than a month to go before the Switch 2 finally arrives, its initial game lineup is taking shape, and things are looking good for Nintendo fans. The company recentlyhighlighted 23 games coming to Switch 2in the coming months and beyond, featuring big third-party names likeCyberpunk 2077and FromSoftware’sThe Duskbloods. Now it sounds like the console will get another big release in the form of one of Rockstar’s most beloved titles.

Anonymous sources reportedly close to Rockstar toldGamereactorthatRDR2would come to Switch 2 later in 2025. Nintendúo reported the same information, which could add validity to the claim, as Gamereactor says the two sites have different sources. Regardless, there’s no word on a specific release date yet, but launching within the year means the port could theoretically land on Switch 2 not long after the console’s release. Whenever it does come out, it’d be a huge boon for the system. Nearly seven years after its launch,Red Dead Redemption 2broke its Steam player count recordtwice in a matter of weeks, in a testament to its enduring legacy.

The source also claimed thatRDR2will be getting a “next-gen upgrade patch” to bring the game up to PS5 and Xbox Series X standards. That update could arrive at the same time as the Switch 2 port or sometime after, but in either case, it’d be a great chance to show off the console’s new-and-improved hardware. TheSwitch 2 has twice as many CPU coresand four times the memory bandwidth of the original, so it could run an updatedRed Dead Redemption 2far better than what’s possible on the Switch 1.

There is one big caveat to the rumor, even if it proves true. Massive AAAgames likeRDR2are too big for Switch 2 cartridges, as they reach well over 80-100 GB. Even a lower-resolution version may struggle to fit on a 64GB cartridge, so a download may be necessary to get the full game. Many third-party games have already confirmed that approach, so it wouldn’t be a big surprise, but it is disappointing for those who prefer hard copies. Of course, theRDR2Switch 2 port is still just a rumor at this point.
