Summary
One of the biggest questions heading intoAvengers: Doomsdayis surrounding who will be part of Sam Wilson’s first Avengers lineup. He was tasked with creating a fresh version of the group inCaptain America: Brave New World, and while Marvel Studios may have since introduced the New Avengers into the franchise, Anthony Mackie’s character will still be leading another group inAvengers: Doomsday.
While there will likely be changes to the lineup moving forward, just as there were with the original version of the Avengers, the first group will always be memorable. Even thoughAvengers: Doomsday’srelease is now delayed, details about the movie are still emerging as fan interest is high, and that has included the identity of Wilson’s first team.
According to industry insiderAlex Perez, during his latest Q&A, he learned thatthis version of the Avengers will feature seven returning heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This group is going to be led by Wilson and will feature Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Captain Marvel, Hulk, Wong, Shang-Chi, and She-Hulk.However, it was noted that She-Hulk would be recruited at some point by the group, meaning she may not appear as an Avenger initially. She has already crossed paths with Bruce Banner within the MCU. Therefore, he is aware of her existenceheading intoAvengers: Doomsday.
If this group is the one that Marvel puts together, then there’s no denying it would be a fresh start for the team. Hulk would be the only member of the group who waspart of the original lineup, while the rest of the team is made up of fresher stars within the franchise. It would provide big opportunities for the likes of Wong, She-Hulk, and Torres, who have all been seen as supporting or television characters until now. However, if Marvel wants people to see this version of the Avengers differently from the previous group, wholesale changes will always be necessary.
The names set to be part of the Avengers will no doubt get people talking, but there are also some notable absences. The likes of Thor, Ant-Man, and Black Panther are surprising omissions, given they have all been confirmedto be part ofAvengers: Doomsdayin some capacity. The upcoming film is built around four different teams: the Avengers, New Avengers, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. Therefore, those characters don’t fit in if they’re not part of Wilson’s group.
It is also worth noting that several members of the rumored Avengers team have not actually been confirmed as part of the cast forAvengers: Doomsday. In fact, out of the entire group, only Wilson, Shang-Chi, and Falcon are officially set to be part of the movie. That would mean the rest of the team will end up appearing as well, giving insight into some of the futurecasting announcements that Marvel teased forAvengers: Doomsday. The team itself is arguably not as strong as the original group, but that’s simply down to how iconic Steve Rogers' version of Captain America and Iron Man were. Once they have been introduced within a movie and shown their ability to work together, that will likely change, with that being the challenge that facesAvengers: Doomsday.
