Buffy the Vampire Slayerfans heard rumblings of a revival for several years, but no new project ever came to fruition. In February 2025, Deadline reported thatHulu had almost given a Buffy reboot a pilot order, and now Sarah Michelle Gellar is sharing some big information about the new show.

Buffy the Vampire Slayerwrapped up in 2003after airing for five seasons on the WB and two on UPN, and fans couldn’t get enough of the story of teenager Buffy Summers (Gellar) battling bad demons alongside the Scooby Gang and her watcher Giles (Anthony Stewart Head). Whilethe spinoff seriesAngelis an enjoyable show, there’s nothing like the original’s funny yet unsettling tone, which is why revisiting Buffy’s universe is so appealing. Gellar has discussed theBuffy the Vampire Slayerreboot quite a few times, and in a recent interview, she clarified one thing that fans will want to hear about.

Gellar was referring to therumor that a casting call for the new showincluded main character/vampire slayer Nova, a girl named Gracie who knows a lot about vampires, and a dorky character called Hugo. At the time of this writing,

noBuffyreboot characters have been announced. Since viewers love the Scooby Gang, they’re curious about the new characters, but it might be a while before any details are shared. Fans are also wonderingwhich original characters could make cameosor more regular appearances. No former cast members have been officially announced as part of the project, either.

In the same interview, the actress also shared that she was motivated to make a newBuffybecause of Chloé Zhao’s “passion” for it. She added:

“what she wanted to do with the show and the character, and why Buffy is needed now — it was the first time where I thought, ‘OK, there’s a reason'.”

Gellar and Zhao have been working on the reboot for a long time, and Gellar made it clear that she will ensure that it’s a thoughtful project. Her words should reassurefans who are concerned that Buffy isn’t the main character now. She said:

“We’ve been at this for three-and-a-half, maybe four years now. We won’t do it unless it’s 100% right and there’s 100% a reason.”

While Nova isn’t the new mainBuffy the Vampire Slayerreboot character, it seems likely that the show will revolve around another slayer who wants to have fun and embrace her teenage life while also taking her responsibilities seriously. Perhaps the new slayer would get some help frompast characters like Giles, and maybe there’s a way forpopular characters who have passed awayto return, too.

SinceBuffyended in 2003,Gellar has starred on several TV shows and also made a name for herself in the horror genre. Besides playing Sydney Roberts on the sitcomThe Crazy Ones, which only aired for one season, she played investigator Kristin Ramsey onWolf Pack. She alsoplayed Karen Davis in 2004’sThe Grudgeand the 2006 sequelThe Grudge 2. Gellar also portrayed chief of forensics Tanya Martin onDexter: Original Sin, which wrapped its first season recentlybut was renewed for a second. Next up, Gellar is appearing inReady or Not: Here I Come, the sequel to theunique 2019 horror movieReady or Not.
