The MCU’s Latest Movie May Be Fresh, But It LacksSinners’Legs

“Earth’s mightiest heroes” aren’t the only Marvel squad whose feathers have been ruffled bySinners’vampires. After grossing $2.4 million on its second Wednesday (a -44% drop),Thunderbolts*nearly ceded its top spot at the box officeto Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan. Among MCU flicks, it topsThor($2.3 million),The Incredible Hulk($2.1 million),Captain America: Brave New World($1.6 million),Eternals($1.6 million),The Marvels($1.5 million) andAnt-Man and the Wasp Quantunmania($1.5 million), but still less thanIron Man($3.1 million).

As of this writing,Sinnershas earned $290 million globally, $220 million of which comes domestically. That’s still a long way to the top of the horror movies all-time list—it’s still at 23rd—but onlyIt($328.8 million),The Sixth Sense($293.5 million),Jaws($260 million) andThe Exorcist($232.9 million) stand between this film and the title of top grossing horror movie in the United States. Maxing out at $300 million domestically would be a stretch forSinners, especially given the coming competition in the coming weeks.Early tracking for Disney’sLilo and Stitchlive-action remake predicts a colossal $100 million Memorial Day Weekend. But the fact that a vampire-horror is going head-to-head with several MCU heavyweights is a feat in itself.
