Squid Gameis a hit series from South Korea that debuted onNetflixin 2021. It features Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and hundreds of other individuals who found themselves at rock bottom due to debt and are offered a life-changing opportunity to redeem themselves, but at the cost of their lives. They could die playing a deadly children’s game or win it and take home the 45.6 billion won grand prize. The show’s unique and enticing story hooked billions of people worldwide, withSquid GameSeason 1 and Season 2 dominating Netflix charts. It is set to return for its third and final season, and Dong-hyuk confirmed some speculations and named one character that fans should keep their eyes on.
Dong-hyuk recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly and addressed some questions about the show. WhentheSquid GameSeason 3 trailerwas dropped, it ended with a baby crying in the background. It isn’t surprising since one of the players, Kim Jun-hee (Jo You-ri), aka Player 222, is pregnant in Season 2. Dong-hyuk, who also directed the series, confirmed that there’s a baby but didn’t detail whether the child was born in or out of the game. Instead, he teased that Jun-hee’s baby would play a vital role in Season 3’s story. He said:
You have [heard] the baby’s crying in the trailer, so people can expect that there could be a baby. This baby plays a very important role in season 3, not just for Jun-hee, but [also] for the fate of everyone inside. You can look forward to that.
In the interview, theSquid Gamecreator explained how he plotted the show while confirming that “Season 3 is indeed a finale.” According to him, he wanted to show the extreme competition in a capitalistic society in Season 1. In Season 2, he wanted to show how someone, in the person ofGi-hun, could break the game roles by bringing a revolution to challenge the system. In its third season, he wanted to make a new approach and highlight how one can still keep their humanity despite being in a challenging environment where they are instilled with fear and their minds are programmed to fight to survive. Dong-hyuk said they want to deliver a message to the audience forSquid Games’final run and that’s to “remain humans amidst the intense competition.” The baby’s presence in such a sick environment can be a major factor in this. Dong-hyuk also added that fans should keep their attention on Myung-gi [Im Si-wan] because “he goes through a most dramatic character arc development.”
Since the baby will play a crucial role in Squid Game Season 3, it’s given that the parents will need to step up, especially Myung-gi since he is the baby’s father. Also, whenMyung-gi and Jun-heemet at the competition, they were not on good terms because he abandoned her after he was embroiled in a crypto scam and even told her to get an abortion. However, it’s evident in the show that Myung-gi still cares for Jun-hee. Given Dong-hyuk’s statement, Myung-gi was visibly burdened by guilt and desire for redemption in Season 2. Although he appeared self-centered and opportunistic, he was very protective of Jun-hee. Despite his moral ambiguity, he has impressive survival instincts and even survives without allies. The baby’s arrival will be a life-changing experience for both Jun-hee and Myung-gi. Fatherhood will definitely change him, especially now that he has to protect two individuals — Jun-hee and their baby. He might sacrifice himself for the two and in this way, he can redeem himself. With Dong-hyuk teasing Myung-gi’s dramatic story arc, there’s no doubt fans will start speculating about his fate in Season 3.
