For years,Star Warsvideo games have focused on either giving players a lightsaber, letting them play a role in massive battles, or adapting the biggest moments from the films. They seldom delved into a different part of the franchise. However, last year, Ubisoft changed that with the release ofStar Wars Outlaws. Not only did it put a scoundrel front-and-center, but it also finally gave players an open-worldStar Warsgame to explore. Now that it has, hopefully theStar Wars Outlawsconcept is here to stay.
WhileStar Wars Outlaws' future may be a mystery, the concept can work for a lot of other games. Specifically, it feels tailor-made fora Lando Calrissian adventure. Lando has been a fan-favorite ever sinceEmpire Strikes Back, yet he has never really had his story explored in great detail in visual media. Through anotherStar Wars Outlaws, that could change.
Lando’s Story Would Make a Fantastic Star Wars Video Game
Not Much is Known About Lando Calrissian
First introduced in 1980 byEmpire Strikes Back, Lando has become one of the most popular supporting characters in the franchise, thanks in large part to Billy Dee Williams' performance. He would end upre-appearing inReturn of the Jedi, but after that, he would be absent from any of the other films for decades. His backstory would be further explored in a trilogy of novels, and fans also got a look into his life between his film appearances and post-Return of the Jediin even more books and comics. However, after Disney purchased Lucasfilm back in 2012, all of those stories were deemedStar Wars Legendsand de-canonized.
In the currentStar Warscanon, fans have seen little of Lando’s story. He did end upmaking an appearance inSolo: A Star Wars Story,The Rise of Skywalker, andStar Wars Rebels, but those did little to further expand his early days. Outside of that, he also appeared inStar Wars Outlaws,Star Wars Battlefront, and some new comics, yet those also did not flesh out his story much either. Lucasfilm has been working on aLandoproject, but there is no news on when that will see the light of day.
Star Wars Outlaws Delivered the Perfect Model for a Lando Game
Lucasfilm may be missing a big opportunity by not fleshing out Lando’s story in a film or video game, so luckily,Star Wars Outlawshas offered up the perfect template to do just that. That title put players in the shoes of Kay Vess, a scoundrel making a name for herself across the galaxy. Through that, players got to interact with theStar Warsgalaxy in a new and unique way, as they spent much of their time striking deals with criminal syndicates and blasting their way through its many planets. If a studio were toswap out Kay Vess for Landoin a similar game, then it could lead to something truly special.
A Lando game likeStar Wars Outlawscould be a great way to explore his backstory, as it could show players just how he cemented himself as a powerful figure on Cloud City. If a developer wanted to dig a little deeper, then it could also be used as a way to bridge the gap between the events ofSolo: A Star Wars Storyand his appearance inEmpire Strikes Back. That film seemingly set up an eventual sequel for many of these characters, and if it does not happen in a film or TV series, then the video game space would be the next best place for it.
It remains to be seen what the future ofStar Wars Outlawsholds. Even if it never gets a sequel, the concept does not deserve to be left gathering dust. There are far more stories that could be told about that side of the galaxy, and one of the best places to start is Lando Calrissian’s adventures.
