Grand Theft Auto 5total sales have passed 215 million copies, a new Take-Two report revealed. TheGTAseries has been a massive cash cow for Rockstar and its parent company, and while the wait for the sixth entry may be longer than many fans were hoping for, the fifth is still bringing in serious revenue. Over a decade after its release,Grand Theft Auto 5is still selling millions of units.
In February 2025, Take-Two revealed thatGTA 5had passed 210 million copies soldover its lifetime, selling five million units in a single quarter. With over 1.5 million copies sold each month on average, it’s no surprise that the title is one of the best-selling video games of all time. Its legacy is far from over, too, asGTA 5has done it again just a few months later.
Take-Two’sMay 2025 financial reportrevealed thatGTA 5has added another five million to its total, bringing lifetime copies sold to an eye-watering 215 million. That’s enough to firmly cement it as the best-selling game of the past decade in terms of both units and dollar amount. OnlyMinecraftsurpassesGTA 5in the all-time top-selling list, and it came out a couple of years earlier and has been released on more platforms.GTA 5still has one leg up onMinecraft, though, with the report mentioning that it reached $1 billion in retail sales faster than any entertainment property in history.
GTA 5 Passes 215 Million Copies Sold as GTA 6 Trailers Set Records
Rockstar has managed to keep sales strong in the years since the game’s release by releasing new content and updates. The recently launched Enhanced edition was a big enough hit thatGTA 5landed on Steam’s most-played games twice, which certainly helped push the title past the 215 million mark. It was likely also a good move in terms of tiding fans over until the release ofGrand Theft Auto 6, which is already setting records on its own accord.
The Take-Two report cites how the firstGTA 6trailer broke the record for the biggest non-music video debut on YouTube, passing 93 million views in 24 hours. Its second trailer then smashed that milestone by raking in 475 million views in the first 24 hours across all platforms. Even thoughGTA 6has been delayed until May 2026, it seems like Rockstar may have another all-time hit in the works.
