In episode 3 ofThe Beginning After The End, the show manages toadapt Arthur’s meeting with Sylviain only a single episode. While this helps keep the show moving at a good pace to cover more plot points from the source material, it leaves some questions for anime-only viewers.
Arthur was suddenly transported to Sylvia’s cave, and we only see a few brief flashes of the aftermath of the bandit attack. From these events, it is not exactly clear the state of Arthur’s parents, if they were looking for him, and where they were going. So, just what happened to Arthur’s parents afterhe fell off the cliff inThe Beginning After The End?
Arthur’s Concerns
Sylvia Puts His Mind at Ease
After nearly falling to his death, Arthur finds himself in front of an imposing, unknown creature. He decides to attack it, but is easily defeated with a single flick. The creature reveals herself to be called Sylvia, and Arthur puts his trust in her after she tells him she will create a portal to send him home.
Before Arthur can feel truly at ease, he asks about how his parents fared with the bandits after his fall.
“My Dad and Mom… Do you know if they’re okay?” -Arthur
“Your family is alive. They continued their journey days ago.” -Sylvia
While this reassurance seems enough for Arthur to stop worrying about them, it leaves some questions unanswered for the audience. From the images and narrative implications, it seems they continued on their journey as originally planned. However, with Arthur missing, the initial reason for traveling to Xyrus City to get him a teacher is also gone. This might be explained by the fact that they are already committed to moving and can’t return to their previous home.
Sylvia does not mention the Twin Horns or Arthur’s parents searching for him after the fall from the cliff, but there appears to be a passage of time between this fall and his current state.This could mean that in the anime,they spent some amount of time looking for Arthur before giving up and continuing their move despite Arthur’s absence.
Arthur’s Parents Assumed the Worst
Their Journey to Xyrus City
In the manhwa, Arthur eventually meets a deviant mage who allows him to speak telepathically with his parents. During this scene, we are shown flashbacks of the aftermath of Arthur’s fall, where his parents are in a state of complete despair. His mother’s wrists are shown to be slit with a knife, implying that she may have tried to harm herself after losing Arthur. Arthur’s dad is shown to have been knocked around by his party members, possibly for failing to protect his wife, Arthur, or both.
While in despair, the good news is that Arthur’s dad is shown to have defeated the bandit chief, and the Twin Horns party emerged unharmed. Arthur’s parents aren’t shown looking for him at the bottom of the cliff, so it’s likely they assumed he didn’t survive or were forced to carry on to Xyrus despite the loss.
Once in Xyrus City,Arthur’s family bid farewell to the Twin Hornsand were taken in by the rich Helstea family. Arthur’s dad then became employed as the captain of security at the Helstea Auction House. When Arthur is finally able to communicate to them that he is alive, his parents are still depressed about the incident. However, Arthur’s voice causes them to light up, and we see that Arthur’s mom’s pregnancy is still going well.
It seems that despite the worst that could happen, Arthur’s continuous horrible luck in encountering bad situations did not end up too terribly this time. All his family and friends in the Twin Horns were unscathed from the incident, and the gains from meeting Sylvia turned out to be a huge advantage for battling in his future conflicts inThe Beginning After The End.
