Summary

Fans who have been trying to findother action-packed TV showsto fill the void left by the conclusion ofBuffy the Vampire Slayerhave been curious about the potential Hulu reboot. A few months after reports of a casting call explaining the new characters,Sarah Michelle Gellar said that was “fake,“which makes people even more intrigued by who could be following in the strong and tough footsteps of Buffy Summers. Of course, along with wondering what new teenage and older characters are part of the series, fans are chatting about which beloved ones could come back.

Some fans think thatsome characters should be left out of theBuffy the Vampire Slayerreboot because they would have to be de-aged, and as horror audiences saw withBilly Loomis (Skeet Urlich) inScream 5, that can sometimes look awkward. But there is another reason why some viewers don’t want to see a certain original character in the new series.

Angel in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode “Enemies”.

Angel Shouldn’t Appear In The Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot, According To Some Fans

Redditor @BIGA5DA started athreadand said thattheBuffy the Vampire Slayerreboot shouldn’t include Angel (David Boreanaz) and Spike (James Marsden). The fan wrote that the new show should move past the love triangle from the original series and also questioned why Buffy Summers’s romantic life would be the focus now. The fan wrote:

“There needs to be a clean slate with this new series focusing on Buffy and the new slayer, rather than continuing that baggage that involves Angel & Spike. A storyline with these characters and Buffy would only do a disservice to Buffy’s arc - there’s no way that she should be considering these characters as love interests 20+ years later.”

Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Angel (David Boreanaz), and Faith (Eliza Dushku) on Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Redditor @Frankenstein_Robot posted that Angel shouldn’t come back:

“Other than Buffy, Angel has always been my favorite character. But I agree, it wouldn’t make much sense to have either of them there.”

Redditor @TheSnarkling agreed that including Angel and Spike would be missing the point ofthe original series, which featured many strong charactersandcharted Buffy’s inspiring coming-of-age storyline. The fan wrote:

“Buffy’s story was so much more than just who she ends up with.”

Some thinkAngel and Spike should at least be referenced in theBuffy the Vampire Slayerreboot, and it would definitely seem odd if Buffy never talked about them. But that’s all that the new show needs to do.

While somedead characters like Anya Jenkins (Emma Caulfield)could return if there’s a rational explanation, it’s harder to see why Angel and Spike could be necessary to the new plot. They were each a significant part of Buffy’s life back in the day, and she learned a lot about herself from each relationship. But it’s unlikely that she would reunite with either one of them, and it also doesn’t seem likely that they would remain friends. While it would be possible for these characters to be part of the new storyline, as perhaps they have a connection to the new vampires the main character is fighting, it might not be the best idea. No matter whothe new main character of theBuffy the Vampire Slayerrebootis,Buffy needs to have a brand new, exciting lifethat doesn’t involve these past love interests.

What Did David Boreanaz Say About A Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot?

In 2018,David Boreanaz talked about a potentialBuffy the Vampire Slayerreboot at New York Comic Con, and he was positive about the idea. According toTV Line, he said:

“Come on, guys, it’s a good thing… They want to embrace a new generation, something new.'

The actor continued that the reboot could use technology, which is an interesting idea that seems likely. Hereprised his role of Angel in the spinoff, which aired from 1999 to 2004, and it doesn’t sound like he would want to play this character yet again. He said, “I hope that it becomes huge and successful” before sharing that hewould be fine with another actor playing Angel. He explained:

“If someone can step in my shoes and play my character, f–k, go ahead! I think that’s great, because I ain’t putting on that makeup anymore!”
