Summary
Deadpool & Wolverinemay be barely a year old, but that hasn’t stopped plots for another “Deadpool and Mutant” movie from brewing. One such idea, which involves multiple X-Men mutants at the center, is still in its early stages, and it comes courtesy of the Merc with a Mouth himself.
Deadpool & Wolverine’s $1.34 billion was 2024’s second biggest and a record gross for the R-rated cinema. But it wasn’t the first time the two characters had clawed their way onto the big screen together. That honor goes to 2009’sX-Men Origins:Wolverine, although it featured a Frankenstein of a Wade Wilson—sewn mouth and laser eyes. Disney’s acquisition of Fox ten years later opened the entire library of X-Men characters to Kevin Feige’s choosing for his MCU franchise.Deadpool & Wolverinehappened, it seems othercalls for another Deadpool and X-Men-centric moviehaven’t gone unnoticed.
Ryan Reynolds Is In The Early Stages Of Working On A Deadpool And X-Men Film
It’s Yet To Be Officially Pitched To Marvel Studios, Though
According toThe Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Reynolds, the actor who plays Wade Wilson/Deadpool is “exploring ideas” for an untitled Deadpool and X-Men film. Unlike previous movies, though, Deadpool would take the backseat as a “supporting player” with the spotlight shining on three or four X-Men characters. The specifics, such as character identity, remain undisclosed as it remains merely an embryonic idea, bereft of an official pitch to Marvel Studios. Equally worthy of note is that the proposed project is to be entirely separate from the X-Men reboot currently being scripted by Michael Lesslie, which is expected to debut no earlier thanAvengers: Secret Warsin 2027.
Having lent a hand to the writing of previous Deadpool films, it’s obvious thatRyan Reynolds remains invested in his character’s desire to matter. Any attempt to pinpoint, this early, the X-Men members whom the actor may handpick is futile. With such a vast roster of mutants—many of whom have yet to receive live-action treatment—any definitive lineup remains purely hypothetical. Still, a few prominent names stand out. Ian McKellen’s Magneto, Channing Tatum’s long-awaited Gambit, andDafne Keen’s X-23 seem like likely contenders, especially since McKellen and Tatum are already among the sixmutants confirmed to appear inAvengers: Doomsdayas part of a multiverse-driven ensemble. Of course, any such plans sit on the premise that Kevin Feige will nod to Reynolds' wishes, a response that may depend on the fate of Lesslie’sX-Menreboot.
For now, aDeadpool and X-Menproject would likely remain on the back burner.Reynolds is occupied with writing the screenplay for Paramount’sBoy Band, an upcoming comedy that will reunite him with the two colleagues fromDeadpool & Wolverine—Shawn Levy, who is set to direct, and Hugh Jackman to co-star.Feige,meanwhile, is focused onthe continued momentum behindThunderbolts*,which debuted in theaters on Friday and has already received audience blessing as one of the strongest MCU outings. The cherry on top would be a greater-than-expected commercial success.
