Summary
It was always going to be difficult to follow up on the decade-long Light and Darkness Saga that formedDestiny 2’s core identity, but finally, the game is ready to tell a new story. InThe Edge of Fate, Guardians will be summoned to Kepler, a small planetoid on the edge of the Solar System, heeding the call of the Nine, although no one seems to know why. Here they will find dark matter, exiled Fallen, and some strangely familiar sights ripped straight out of history.
However, there’s one question that has emerged aboutDestiny 2’s new story arc. When Bungie teased Frontiers,Destiny 2’s next chapter after The Final Shape, it was hinted that the game would be going beyond the bounds of the Solar System for the first time. The recent unveiling of Kepler being in the Oort Cloud has naturally raised some eyebrows, as this isn’t the clean break from the old setting that it was implied to be. In light of this reception, it might be inDestiny 2’s best interests to go much further.
Destiny 2 Needs to Go Further Than Kepler for the Edge of Fate to Hit Hard
The Final Shape saw a large drop inDestiny 2’s player countas many people felt they had seen the end of the story, and that was the natural jumping-off point. Bungie was aware of this, making sure to tease Frontiers around the time that The Final Shape launched, hoping to keep players invested in the game’s ongoing story. But when the recent reveal finally happened, it wasn’t what many players had expected, as Bungie had previously stated Frontiers would be going beyond the Solar System, yet here was Kepler, nestled just beyond the reach of Pluto. Not the far-flung place that many had imagined.
Destinyhas explored the Solar System extensively throughout its long history, taking players to most planets to some degree, and doing an excellent job at telling compelling stories about them. But there is an appetite among some long-time fans who would prefer a clean break with this familiar area of space. SomeDestiny 2leaks and rumorsin the past have only stoked this desire to see more far-off destinations, and while Bungie is not in control of these, it doesn’t help in managing player expectations.
There Are So Many Places Outside the Solar System Destiny 2 Could Go
With such a rich tapestry of locations to draw from and the threat to the Solar System defeated, this should have been the time for the game to make a clean break.Destiny 2needs to go further than just Kepler and explore some completely new, distant locations. There are so many tales fromDestiny’s rich lore that mention places beyond the Sun’s reach, such as Torobatl, the desecrated home planet of the Cabal, and Fundament, where theHive sisters made pacts with the Worm Gods. It doesn’t have to be a known location either, as visiting a completely new planet could be just as interesting, if not more so.
None of this would need to come at the expense of the content already available in the game.Destiny 2’s content vaulthas caused more than its fair share of controversy, and much of the content in the game at the moment is still relevant. Instead, each expansion could be a new expedition into unknown space, if Bungie wanted to be careful about things. There is every possibility that Kepler is this jumping off point for something bigger, but with Renegades taking inspiration fromStar Wars, it’s unclear how that might manifest in the short term.
Destiny 2Renegades will launch Jun 29, 2025.
In short,Destiny 2needs to make a big splash now that its first narrative arc is wrapped up, and Kepler may be playing things too safe. The game has plenty of untapped potential, some of which Bungie could be saving up, but so far, a lot has been left on the table. While there has been some excitement over the recent reveals, there has been another contingent of fans unmoved, hoping forDestiny 2to take the bold step and leave Earth behind. There are still plenty of years of content coming for the game, but some fans could decide to bow out until a complete refresh happens in a possibleDestiny 3.
